This paper draws on lessons learned so far in Scotland to inform the debate surrounding supervised community treatment in England and Wales.

What’s it worth? : the social and economic costs of mental health problems in Scotland / SAMH

SAMH, Scotland’s leading mental health charity, commissioned an analysis of the social and economic costs of mental health problems in Scotland. The study examined not only the costs of providing health and social care services and losses to the economy, but also the personal costs of mental health problems.

Findings indicate that in 2005, the total cost of mental health problems in Scotland was £8.6 billion. This is more than the total amount spent in Scotland by the NHS on all health conditions combined, and is equivalent in monetary value to 9% of the Gross Domestic Product.

A world to belong to : social networks of people with mental health problems / SAMH

SAMH launched this report in December 2006. it finds that in every area of community life, including work, people with mental health problems are still likely to experience exclusion. The report summarises the findings of a research project exploring the social networks of people who use mental health services. Its key findings are that:

• when compared with a random sample of the general public, people using mental health services were more than four times as likely to live alone

• they were more than twice as likely not to have a partner

• 90 per cent were not in paid work, although 38 per cent undertook voluntary work

Pushed into the shadows : young people’s experience of adult mental health facilities / Children’s Commissioner for England

The Children's Commissioner for England has published Pushed into the shadows: young people’s experience of adult mental heath facilities. The research, conducted by Youngminds, a children’s mental health charity, tracks the experiences of 16 young people across England and Wales who had been admitted to adult psychiatric wards in the last 18 months. The findings show that despite investment in child and adolescent mental health services in recent years, these facilities are often unable to respond to emergency situations and young people are then admitted to adult mental health in-patient facilities where their care is often unsatisfactory, poorly planned and inadequately monitored.
