The key components of the Conservatoire’s overall approach are:Executive and Management Responsibility relating to consumer lawThe Conservatoire’s Academic Registrar takes a lead in the Conservatoire’s response to consumer law. The Academic Registrar is accountable to the Conservatoire’s Chief Executive Officer and Conservatoire Executive Committee for this activity. He and the quality team work closely with senior staff in the Conservatoire’s schools in the implementation of the Conservatoire’s approach and in achieving ongoing enhancement.Standardised policy and documentation relating to consumer lawThe Conservatoire has a set of model terms and conditions for Higher Education students for all programmes. The Terms and Conditions establish a single set of terms for all CDD programmes in key contractual areas, but allow necessary scope for local variation to other terms where this is required by a Conservatoire school. The student terms and conditions include a common set of terms which regulate amendments to the student contract. The Conservatoire provides schools with a model offer letter, a model fees policy and guidance on compliance with consumer law.The Shared Services Office monitors the use of the model documents by schools for compliance with consumer law and invites user feedback on them. The Conservatoire has a common student complaints policy and procedure and a common admissions complaints and appeals policy and procedure for applicants, which is published on school websites.Review and enhancement of information provided to applicants and studentsThe Conservatoire’s Shared Services Office reviews the information provided to applicants in the light of HEFCE guidance, and on an ongoing basis supports the schools to enhance this where necessary. The Conservatoire provides guidance on, and scrutinises paper prospectuses before publication. The Conservatoire’s Senate has agreed a standard index of contents for student handbooks, as well as to the introduction of core text in some sections and sharing of good practice in others. The Conservatoire seeks feedback from student representatives on the development of new common policies and codes of practice.Training and guidance on consumer lawThe Academic Registrar and his team attend external training and monitor external developments relating to consumer law.Awareness of consumer law issues among key staff cross-Conservatoire is raised through a set of in-house guidance prepared by the Academic Registrar, which is updated and recirculated to schools annually. Consumer law is discussed at the Conservatoire’s executive committee (CEC), chaired by the CEO, and at the Registrars’ Group, a meeting of senior school administrators chaired by the Academic Registrar. ................
