Sign up to attend an optional Sunday

Night (10.22.17) Networking Dinner.

Bruce is coauthor of a number of recent studies in the journal Science (April 2014 and December 2015) and the American Economic Review, finding that university research is a valuable component of the U.S. economy, repaying investments through public value and impact on employment and business nationwide. "The main purpose of science funding isn't as a jobs program or a stimulus program, but this study provides the first detailed information about the short-term economic impacts of federal research," said Weinberg.

Weinberg and his colleagues tracked investments at nine large, Midwestern universities. In total, the schools received $7 billion in research and development funding in 2012, about half of which came from the federal government. The economists found that $1 billion of that investment was spent on equipment and services from U.S. vendors. Of those expenditures, 16 percent stayed in the university's home county; another 16 percent remained within the state.

Session 1 | 10:00 AM ? 10:50 AM

1A ? Exploring the RD Professional's Role in Driving Bottom Up Faculty Initiatives Smith Seminar Room, Physics Research Building, 191 W. Woodruff Avenue

Many institutions are committed to using faculty-driven approaches for new research initiatives. However, coordinating initiatives into a coherent whole can be challenging. Depending on an institution's culture, top down approaches from senior administrators can often be seen as intrusive and lacking transparency. Yet, completely grassroots led efforts often struggle to meet deadlines and reach agreement. To address this challenge, the RD professional can be a neutral intermediary to help drive faculty ideas to implementation. The presenter will share an example from the University of Chicago where they created a campus wide approach to computation and data science that resulted in the launch of a new institute and building. Presenter: Julia Lane, University of Chicago

1C ? Developing and Celebrating Faculty Scholarship 350 A/B Research Commons - Brainstorming

In this session, participants will discuss successful (and maybe not so successful) faculty development programs and activities. We will provide participants with some examples of building relationships with faculty early on, and how to demonstrate to faculty that the grants/sponsored programs offices are on "their" side. We will also discuss and share ideas of celebrating faculty scholarship, proposal submission and external awards. Presenter: Kristin Beck, Northern Michigan University

Break | 10:50 AM ? 11:00 AM

Session 2 | 11:00 AM ? 11:50 AM

2A ? Growing an RD Community at a Decentralized University 340 Research Commons - Colloquia

We have presented to NORDP on our grassroots efforts to connect RD professionals across silos: to share best practices (and resources), increase collaboration, and provide professional development opportunities. We have had great success in defining RD and building interest--our second annual half-day RD conference in June 2017 drew almost 200 registrants. Presenters: Jill Jividen & Beth LaPensee, University of Michigan

2B ? Developing Educational Sessions for Faculty, Staff, and Students 352 Research Commons - Classroom

In this session, participants will learn strategies for successful sessions to engage faculty, staff, and students into external funding. I will provide participants with the basics of how to develop sessions, ways to engage attendees, and some ideas that really worked, and others that didn't work. Presenter: Kristin Beck, Northern Michigan University

2C ? Grand Challenges: Lessons Learned Across a Variety of Models 350 A/B Research Commons - Brainstorming

Indiana University has used different models to identify two Grand Challenge Initiatives, with a third model under way this fall to identify a third Grand Challenge Initiative. Each approach raises particular opportunities and challenges in terms of faculty engagement, crossing disciplinary and institutional boundaries to build teams, and institutional prioritization. We'll discuss some of the lessons we've learned at IU, and what we wish we'd known before we started (and re-started) the processes. Presenters: Eva Allen & Faith Hawkins, Indiana University

Lunch | 11:50 AM ? 1:15 PM The Faculty Club, 181 Oval Drive, South Facilitating Faculty Research Efforts Jan Weisenberger, Senior Associate Vice President for Research

*Staff will be available to help guide you to the Faculty Club. Walking maps also provided in packets. Please allow 5-10 minutes walking time.

Session 3 | 1:15 PM ? 2:05 PM

3A ? Practical Strategies for Facilitating Innovative Research 340 Research Commons - Colloquia

Discover the "Ideas Lab" methodology, creativity tools and their application, and other practical strategies for facilitating innovative research. The audience will gain valuable knowledge in creative collaboration, learn skills directly related to developing individuals and teams of faculty within their organizations, including engaging faculty. Presenter: Donnalyn Roxey, Know Innovation

3B ? Strategies to Engage Faculty and Collaborative Research 352 Research Commons - Classroom

During this session, three colleges from Ohio State: Arts & Sciences, Education and Human Ecology, and Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences will discuss several initiatives they had implemented to engage faculty and promote research efforts. We ask that other Institutions also bring their Best Practices for discussion. Presenters: Lori Kaser, Kim Lightle, & Jared Port, The Ohio State University

3C ? EMPOWER ? A Collaborative Research Development Strategy (That Works) 350 A/B Research Commons - Brainstorming

Mentoring is shown to influence career success, satisfaction, and productivity among faculty, thus enhancing the institution's investment, retention rates, and reputation. (Moody 2009) (Ragins 1999) This session will highlight a successful mentoring grant program for early career and mid-career women and minority faculty designed to help them become successful in sponsored research and scholarly activity and achieve significant professional growth and advancement. Other efforts stemming from EMPOWER will also be discussed. Presenter: Etta Ward, Indiana University ? Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)

4A ? Bringing Together Biomedical, Physical, and Social Sciences to Solve Societal Challenges 340 Research Commons - Colloquia

Session format: slide presentation followed by round table discussion. Presenter: Kate Hayes-Ozello, The Ohio State University

4B ? Foundation Funding: Issues and Trends 352 Research Commons - Classroom

Foundations and Associations are proliferating at an unprecedented rate across the US. Many of these have real impacts on higher education and research: they can drive a disease-specific agenda; they can invent whole new fields of enterprise; they can try to re-invent governmental funding. In short ? even if we don't work with them, they are affecting our universe. If we do work with them, we are best served by knowing a bit about their cultures and their reasons for trying to engage with us. This presentation will talk about the big trends in this kind of funding ? and some of the more vexing questions and issues that result. Q&A will let you ask Maureen and other fundraising colleagues about the funders you would like to understand. Presenter: Maureen Martin, University of Michigan

4C ? Rising to the Challenge: Securing Corporate and Foundation Funding for Research 350 A/B Research Commons - Brainstorming

The federal government has historically played a major role in funding research at universities, but over the past decade the levels of support have flattened out. Academia is turning more and more to foundations and corporations to supplant those critical resources. However, at many universities, corporate and foundation relations (CFR) is located within the development office and is often "led" by a single person. Join us for a discussion of Indiana University's evolving approach to integrating a comprehensive, effective, and modern CFR effort in support of research and philanthropy. Presenters: Jennifer Lawrence & Whitney Riley, Indiana University

Break | 3:05 PM ? 3:15 PM

Session 5 | 3:15 PM ? 4:05 PM

5A ? Helping Faculty Communicate the Value & Impact of Research 340 Research Commons - Colloquia

Communicating research to broad audiences is crucial in this funding climate (and fact-resistant era). This presentation will offer an overview of the reasons why faculty should be communicating to non-specialist audiences (e.g., obligation, public mission, name recognition), as well as provide a model for teaching strategies to faculty--the Communicating Science Seminar Series developed for U-M Medical School researchers. Presenter: Jill Jividen, University of Michigan
