Communications Specialist

Job Title: Communications Specialist

Position Type: 40 Hours per Week, Full-Time, Non-Exempt

Supervisory: No

Reports to: President/CEO

Communications SPECIALIST Traits: Strong communication skills, articulate with the written and spoken word, collaborative, pro-active, confident, public speaker, problem solver, shows initiative, good time management, creative, can work independently as well as being a team player.

POSITION SUMMARY: Position will collaborate with the President/CEO in development and execution of the Chamber’s communication and promotions strategy. Individual will be responsible for executing the communication and promotions plan using newsletters, websites, social media, advertising, direct mail (if applicable) and email. Other primary responsibilities include preparing press releases, managing multiple projects, working with various committees of the Chamber, measuring and reporting results. Ideal candidate will have the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Produce Chamber regular weekly communications and other publications, such as but not limited to; press releases, website content, social media, radio shows and newsletters. Assist in planning Chamber events, programs, and workshops as well as all communications needed to promote all events, workshops, and programs. Keep Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) on all aspects of position and update as needed.

▪ Advertising and Media: Maintain relationships with media. Oversee advertising in the Chamber’s publications and manage external print, online, and radio advertising with designated programs and events.

▪ Promotion: Attend ribbon cuttings, grand openings and other events, and produce press releases, as well as event advertising. Design ads and flyers for event promotion. Write press releases for Chamber committees and submit to local media and post on website.

▪ Relationship Management: Interact with members, answer questions and issues management, aid visitors when needed. Strong interpersonal skills required for event management. Telephone etiquette a must, position assists in answering the phone.

▪ Annual Publications: Visitor Guide and membership directory (if applicable)

▪ Web Site Management: Websites include; main website, Scenic Half, Visit Sandpoint, and others. Develop and maintain social media presence for Chamber and Visit Sandpoint.

▪ Database Management: Use ChamberMaster to update information on all on-going meetings and events.

▪ Event Management: Assist with Chamber events including event timeline, set up and execution. Create and update registration and sponsorship forms, coordinate advertising, recruit and manage volunteers and update all communications for events.

▪ Monthly Meetings: Collaborate with staff on General Membership Luncheon topics and overall luncheon agenda.

▪ Other Responsibilities: Assist Chamber committees when needed, aid in registration for various luncheons and events, encourage members to participate in communication and promotional efforts, answer phones and assist visitors when needed, and other duties as assigned.

▪ Regular attendance during office hours Monday thru Friday.

▪ Abides by all safety and security rules set forth by the Chamber and regulatory agencies.

▪ Performs all other duties and responsibilities assigned by the President/CEO or its designated representative.

SKILLS NEEDED: Strong PC skills, experience in letter, publication and media writing with graphics background including Wordpress experience. Ability to establish and maintain internal and external communication with all contacts. Ability to work with a diverse group of community leaders, business owners and board of directors. Self-Starter and able to show initiative and follow through on projects to completion.

EDUCATION: College degree in related field; or equivalent career experience.

EXPERIENCE: Applicable experience in communications, marketing, event management, advertising, public relations or related field encouraged. Priority given to experience within non-profit sector.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: In regards to Event Management, must be able to manage tables and chairs and other items as needed to implement event plan. Weather hazards if applicable could include any and all types when managing an outdoor event.
