CUNY COLLABORATIVE INCENTIVE RESEARCH GRANTS PROGRAM

Submission Deadline: Friday, February 3, 2017 at 5:00pm

Track 3: Summer Collaborative Research Grant Program Goals

The Community College Summer Collaborative Research Opportunity Grant program intends to foster collaborations between community college faculty and faculty at bachelor’s degree-granting CUNY schools. Faculty at CUNY community colleges are encouraged to forge new collaborative research relationships, or to strengthen existing collaborative relationships by developing proposals that explore new avenues of inquiry. The grants provide summer salary for the community college faculty as well as funds for research supplies to be shared between the collaborative partners.

The submission deadline is February 3, 2017. Awards will be announced by the end of April, thereby allowing work to commence in the summer of 2017.

We expect to make 5-10 Summer Collaborative Research Opportunity Grant awards in 2017.

Eligibility

• Only tenured or tenure-track faculty employed by CUNY community colleges are eligible to be PIs. Research faculty, lecturers, adjunct faculty, and full-time Higher Education Officers are not eligible. Only one proposal per faculty member is allowed. A tenured or tenure-track CUNY senior college faculty member must be a co-PI.

All proposals must be based on researchable questions or hypotheses. Web or media development, workshops, book authorship, or similar types of initiatives are ineligible.

• Faculty may apply for one of the three tracks of the Community College Research Grant in any given year.

• The Institutional Review Board (IRB) must approve research involving human subjects prior to the release of any funds. Without IRB approval CCRG funding will not be allocated for any research involving human subjects. For more information about IRB and human subjects research, visit

All awardees must submit a one-page summary report at the end of the funding period. Future eligibility for participation in this and other internal funding programs is contingent on the submission of a post-award report.

Proposal Development and Structure

The proposal consists of a narrative section and a signature page. Templates may be downloaded here:

The proposal includes a title page (with abstract), a four-page narrative (excluding references), and a one-page description of the contribution of the two investigators to the research.

The narrative section of your proposal should include the following sections:

1. Research Question

Briefly describe your research question or hypothesis. Contextualize your project idea within the relevant literature.

2. Research Methods

Describe your implementation strategy. How will you answer your research question or test your hypothesis? What methods will you employ and what data will you collect? Provide references to the relevant literature when using established methods. Include preliminary data if applicable although this is not necessary. Describe in a paragraph how you plan to leverage your anticipated research success.

3. Collaborative Arrangements

Describe in one paragraph how each investigator contributes to the collaboration.

Supplementary documentation

1. Biosketch

The PI and Co-PI must submit a Curriculum Vitae (2-page limit in NIH or NSF biosketch format or see proposal template).

2. Current and Pending Funding

The PI and Co-PI must submit a list of current and pending funding from external agencies.

3. Budget & Budget Narrative

Grants of $7,500 will be awarded. The budget includes the following:

• $5,000 in tax levy funds towards one month of summer salary for Community College faculty. The summer salary will be made available for the month of June 2017 only.

• $2,500 in RF funds for research supplies that will be shared between the collaborative partners. Provide a brief budget justification for these funds.

Note: Program funds may not be used for faculty course release.

Submission Guidelines

Complete proposals must be submitted via the online proposal submission form, which can be accessed through the following link:

Proposal Package

The proposal must be approved and signed on the signature page by an appropriate administrative official at each participating campus, and should follow the standard college proposal approval process.

The signature page, title page, proposal narrative, references, budget, budget justification, 2-page CV and current/pending grant information must be converted into a single PDF for submission via the online system (link provided above).

Name the file as follows:

File name: SCROG_LastNameOfLeadPI_proposal.pdf

Proposal Evaluation

Proposals will be evaluated on the basis of their technical merit, feasibility, and collaborative arrangements. Reviewers will assess scholarly achievement including the faculty members’ publication record and history of external funding. Junior faculty will be judged based on the promise of their research programs.

The reviewers will rank the proposals according to the following numerical values:

1 – excellent; 2 – very good; 3 – good; 4 – fair; 5 – poor

The final awards will be decided by a CCRG faculty committee, and will be based on the numerical rankings and reviewer comments.

Submission Timetable

Complete submissions must be uploaded no later than 5:00 PM on Friday, February 3, 2017. Award announcements are expected to occur in April 2017.
