Chemeketa Community College Placement Test InformationWe want you to be successful at Chemeketa. Enrolling in courses appropriate to your current skill level in reading, writing, and math is an important first step on the road to success. For this reason, new students who wish to enroll in Career and Technical programs (e.g. Automotive, Human Services, Dental Assisting) and students enrolling in transfer credit classes are expected to complete the COMPASS Placement Test. You should submit your application for admission prior to taking the COMPASS Placement Test. The test is used to place you in appropriate class levels. It is not an admission test and the results will have no effect upon your acceptance as a student at Chemeketa. However, you may be required to enroll in specific math, reading or writing classes based on your placement test scores. The COMPASS Placement Test is administered in the Testing Annex, Salem Campus Bldg. 6/ 216 on a drop-in basis.Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (Last test begins at 3:00)Tuesdays10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. (Last test begins at 6:00)COMPASS Placement Test BasicsThe test includes sections on writing skills, reading skills and mathematics (calculator permitted). You may take one section or the complete test.Bring your K number and picture I.D. No cell phones are allowed.Students often find the COMPASS test question format a little confusing, so take time before the test to get familiar with the way the test works. To practice the test question format used on the COMPASS Placement Tests, go to . You can practice reading, writing, and math test questions at that website. You can also practice answering additional writing, math and reading sample test questions at pass/sample/index.html. Take your time while testing. There is a maximum of three hours. Average test time to complete the full Placement test is approximately 2 hours.If you do not understand test directions, ask the proctor!Your test scores will be immediately available after you’ve completed the test and will be loaded into the college system by noon of the following day.After you receive your Placement Test results, complete the online New Student Orientation at my.chemeketa.edu and register for an advising session.Students requesting special accommodations should contact Disabilities Services at 503-399-5192. The Compass Placement Test – MathematicsThe compass Placement Test has four levels of testing. The test moves you from one level to another without telling you. The amount of time you spend on the test may be minimized if you start at the level that is best for you.The levels are:PRE-ALEBRA, (little or no experience with algebra)ALGEBRA (some experience with algebra)COLLEGE ALGEBRA (if you did well in Algebra 2 in the last year)TRIGONOMETRY (if you did well in Pre0Calculus in the last year)Helpful Tips During the TestWhen you type in your K# be sure to type the “K” firstThe test will start by asking general information questions about you. Be sure to use the same name you used when you filled out your admissions application.Look in the bottom right hand corner of the screen to “Click to go on”.You can use one piece of scratch paper at a time. When you have used up one piece, let the proctor know and you will be given another piece of paper.If you don’t know how to do a problem, don’t try to guess the answer. If you accidentally guess correct answers you could be placed in a more advanced course than is appropriate for you.There is a calculator on the computer that you may use during the test, or you may bring your own. Graphing scientific calculators, like the TI-83 and TI-84 are allowed.Read directions carefully.Schedule enough time so you are not pressed for time. After the Compass Placement TestYou will get your scores right after you complete the test. However, these scores are not always easy to interpret. It is important to talk with an advisor about what class you should register for. You need to Register/Make an Appointment for an advising session.
