Higher Learning Commission (HLC) Faculty Qualifications for Hiring

The Philosophy Instructional Council of the Maricopa County Community College District is firmly committed to maintaining high quality teaching standards and expertise among the Philosophy faculty of the MCCCD. In response to the HLC changes to make teaching qualifications at the community college include either a Master's degree (or better) in the teaching field or a Master's degree in any area teaching field with 18 graduate semester hours in the teaching field, the Philosophy IC supports the following guidelines for determining if degrees and coursework are within the teaching field of Philosophy.

1. A Master's degree (or higher) within the teaching field of Philosophy, OR

Master's degree in any teaching field with 18 graduate semester hours in the teaching field of Philosophy.

2. Graduate level coursework with the following prefixes is within the teaching field of Philosophy:

PHI, PHIL, any cross listed course with Philosophy (or PHI or PHIL), or any PHI or PHIL course that is considered to be a philosophy graduate course by the university.

The Philosophy Instructional Council will evaluate any other coursework as necessary to determine if that course is within the teaching field of Philosophy.
