Dear Student:

Thank you for your interest in our Scholarship Program

Don Pobuda was a founding member, board member and third President of the Livingston Sunrise Rotary Club in Brighton, Michigan. He inspired those with whom he came in contact to become better persons and always “think outside the box.”

If one’s life could be summarized into three words, for Don it would have been family, education and community. Don was an advocate for youth and dedicated his professional life to education as a teacher, counselor, coach and superintendent. He touched the lives of thousands of young people during his 30 years in education.

Once retired, Don’s quest to help others just continued on. He served as interim Superintendent in 6 different school districts in Michigan as well as interim City Manager in the City of Brighton . Don served as President of his condo association, Chairman of the Genoa Township Planning Commission, SCORE counselor and on the St. Patrick Parrish Education Commission.

Don spent the final 3 years of his life living with leukemia. However, only very few close to Don even knew above his battle with this disease as Don continued his service to others as if there was nothing amiss. In fact, the most heard phrase at Don’s funeral was, “I didn’t even know Don was sick.” This was a tribute to the kind of man Don was to all who knew him: a man of integrity, kindness and loyalty.

We want to memorialize Don by awarding the scholarship to an individual who has overcome obstacles, physical or otherwise, in order to excel. The scholarship will be open to any senior graduating from a Livingston County High School and continuing on for post high school education, either academic or vocational.

Rotarians and their immediate families are not eligible. The scholarship award is $1,000 and it can be renewed annually for up to 3 additional, consecutive years.

The scholarship focuses on the following criteria:

▪ Challenges overcome to excel and graduate from high school

▪ Community Service

▪ Job experience and/or extra curricular activities

For those semi-finalists selected based on the above criteria, a personal interview will be scheduled. The scholarship winner(s) will then be chosen from the semi-finalists.

Your completed application must include the attached application form and two (2) letters of recommendation, one from a school counselor or teacher and one from someone outside the school environment. Staple all the pages together.

Applications and attachments must be mailed to Livingston Sunrise Rotary Foundation, P.O. Box 1916, Brighton, Michigan 48116 and received by April 3, 2009. The award date is May 1, 2009.
