Manual Instructions - NC Community Colleges

Introduction

The development of this Palliative and End of Life training has been made possible by the North Carolina Personal Home Care Aide State Training (PHCAST) project. The PHCAST Management team and full Partner Team identified this training opportunity to further strengthen North Carolina’s direct care workforce. The Association for Home and Hospice Care of North Carolina worked with the PHCAST Management team to write this curriculum. It may be used in the high schools, community colleges, home care agencies, hospice agencies and PACE organizations.

This need was identified given the growth of hospice care provided in North Carolina as well as anticipated future growth. Additionally, providing care to hospice patients, their families and caregivers has unique aspects that Nurse Aides need to know to ensure they have the knowledge and skills necessary to provide quality care for patients at end of life, which encompasses hospice and palliative care.

The Association for Home and Hospice Care of North Carolina is appreciative to the PHCAST Management Team for the vision to expand the Home Care curriculum to include Palliative and End of Life training.

Manual Information

The manual is divided into 11 sections. Each section represents one module. Supplemental to the slides are additional handouts and activities. The eleventh section of the manual is a teleconference on Ethics for the Nursing Assistant. I have included the flyer that we used to market it to the home care and hospice providers along with the slides and the Nursing Assistant Code of Ethics which is covered in the Legal and Ethical Issues Module.

The modules include:

• Faculty slides with notes,

• Participant slides-handout

• Supplemental information

• Activities

• Reference List

• In-service modules (shorter version of original module)

For home care and hospice agencies the in-service version of the modules were adapted from the original modules. The in-service modules are a shorter version of the original module and Include the faculty slides with notes and the participant slides. The in-service materials may be found in the specific folder of the each module in it’s own folder. However, the same handouts and activities may be utilized as the faculty determines appropriate for the audience and as time will allow.

It is our hope these modules will provide the faculty and participants the necessary materials to enhance the training of Home Care Aides and provide them with the necessary competencies to care for hospice and palliative patients, families and caregivers.

This project has been a team effort. I would like to thank the PHCAST Management team and the Association for Home and Hospice Care of North Carolina staff for their time and effort to complete these training modules.
