Position Description

The Commonwealth Corporation, a public-private corporation focused on workforce development, youth development, economic development, and the future of education and workforce training, seeks applications for the position of Manager of Marketing and Communications

Who We Are:

Commonwealth Corporation is a quasi-public workforce development agency that strengthens the skills of Massachusetts youth and adults by investing in innovative partnerships with industry, education and workforce organizations. Our primary goals are:

• To build regional industry training partnerships that prepare youth and unemployed workers for jobs in demand that lead to higher rates of employment;

• To upgrade the skills of underemployed workers to meet specific employer skill demands leading to job retention, upgrades and wage gains; and

• To increase the share of youth engaged in education and employment pathways preparing them for post-secondary education and careers.

Commonwealth Corporation works with hundreds of Massachusetts companies, thousands of new and experienced workers, and thousands of youth and young adults each year.

Among other activities, we:

• Administer the Workforce Training Fund, a trust that awards $20 million in grants to companies annually;

• Administer YouthWorks, Massachusetts’ subsidized youth employment program;

• Coordinate education and workforce activities for the state’s juvenile justice system;

• Implement and sell Signal Success, our soft skills and employability curriculum;

• Operate Governor Charlie Baker’s Commission on Digital Innovation and Lifelong Learning, a new, high profile effort to extend education and training to many more people in Massachusetts.

Commonwealth Corporation currently funds its work through primarily through government and philanthropic grants and contracts. In 2011, Commonwealth Corporation created the Commonwealth Corporation Foundation, a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization to raise funds in support of our programmatic activities.

The Marketing and Communications Manager creates and oversees the implementation of a strategic marketing plan to support the organization’s goals. The manager will represent Commcorp in the community and work with both internal and external team members to accomplish shared goals. Reporting to the President and CEO and working closely with the Corporation’s senior leadership team, the Marketing and Communications Manager will be the lead staff member responsible for building Commonwealth Corporation’s brand, visibility, and messaging further. This position will supervise a Marketing Communications Coordinator.

The Manager of Marketing and Communications will have a comprehensive portfolio, focusing on developing and managing marketing programs in specific channels to support strategic objectives of the organization and defining and building CommCorp brand strategies by:

1) Marketing Commonwealth Corporation’s signature programs and initiatives; (2) utilizes data to understand, develop and execute marketing (3) creation of all collateral materials for events and programs. (4) overseeing the production of reports and publications; (5) creating and developing making programs and initiatives (6) Maintaining brand alignment through marketing channels (7)media relations; (8) event design and execution; (9) website and social media management; (10) maintaining and expanding the Corporation’s database of stakeholder contacts; and (11) assisting the CEO with executive writing, internal communications, and public positioning.

Key Responsibilities:

• The Manager of Marketing and Communications is accountable for elevating the Commonwealth Corporations positioning and amplify its brand through the development and execution of communications strategy and messaging, executing brand strategies and achieving goals and objectives that support the organizations strategic plan

• Communicate with senior management about marketing initiatives and project metrics, as well as to brainstorm fresh strategies

• Cross functional leadership, providing support to internal stakeholders, and external agencies and vendors on marketing strategies and communications that clearly demonstrate the power and impact of commonwealth corporation programs and support the overall brand positioning

• Responsible for digital marketing campaign success and leading the day-to-day management and delivery of client digital marketing programs including organic social media, paid social media, marketing automation, and email campaigns.

• Propose and manage marketing research projects to generate consumer insights in support of improved marketing strategy and communications

• Measure and report on the performance of marketing campaigns, gain insight and assess against goals and budgets

• Serve as the organization's lead writer and editor. Develop and maintain relationships with state and local media outlets. Prepare key spokespeople for media engagement.

• Promote a culture of entrepreneurship, high-performance and continuous improvement, and develop direct reports using a supportive and collaborative approach.

• Build strong relationships across the organization to stay current on our innovative programming and collaborations and infuse an awareness of marketing and messaging in all our work.

• Manage and develop content for websites maintained by Commonwealth Corporation

• Coordinate with the Massachusetts Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development and Governor’s office on media outreach and strategy

• Work in collaboration with program staff to produce reports that Commonwealth Corporation is required to issue under state law, and for key programs such as the Workforce Training Fund, YouthWorks, and the Governor’s Commission on Digital Innovation and Lifelong Learning

Supervision

• Supervise one full-time Communications Associate and train to manage assignments required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Passionate about Commonwealth Corporations mission

• Demonstrated experience with a development of marketing strategy

• Excellent full-cycle marketing skills. Ability to lead the execution of marketing programs from start to finish, driving collaboration with the stakeholders and leveraging the right internal processes. Ability to evaluate the impact of marketing programs in achieving their stated objectives, including impact on internal and external parties.

• Demonstrated ability to develop business cases for marketing programs at the proposal stage and make recommendations on marketing tactics

• Experience with building marketing programs to support specific marketing objectives across different channels and segments in support of our overall strategic marketing plan

• Proven track record working directly with partners to translate information into clear, persuasive and compelling stories that drive engagement.

• Strong analytical, content and project management development skills

• Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to rapidly write clear, strong, compelling communications. Ability to develop quality documents under pressure of a deadline and accommodate a variety of writing and editing style needs such as business reports and presentations, grant proposals, promotional materials, research/academic briefs and others.

• Excellent interpersonal skills, flexibility, diplomacy. Ability to keep information confidential.

• Ability to work independently and collaboratively, take initiative, and meet deadlines through marketing programs and initiatives. Detail-oriented, problem-solving aptitude and ability to prioritize work daily.

• Values all people for their unique talents, and takes an active role in promoting practices that support diversity, inclusion, and global work, as well as cultural competence

• Proficiency with current Marketing and communications technology, including but not limited to website maintenance (WordPress) and content management (Hootsuite), social networking (Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook), email marketing, digital photography and videography.

• Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, InDesign, Wordpress, Salesforce, and Microsoft Office Suite

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required

• Bilingual in Spanish preferred

• Experience supporting multicultural businesses and populations

• At least 5 years of experience in marketing and communications, including direct experience with all or most of the job dimensions discussed above.

• Excellent analytics, writing and editing skills;

• Fluency with all social media outlets; especially LinkedIn and Twitter;

• Proficiency in Windows-based software. Preference for additional knowledge of other computer applications, including Mac and InDesign, WordPress, and Adobe software and Salesforce.

• General knowledge of workforce, youth, or economic development, or a willingness to learn about these areas.

• Ability to operate as an effective tactical as well as strategic thinker.

• Dependability and strong interpersonal skills; self-starter.
