3 Questions for Mr. Rob Norris, president of Starboard Cruise Services
Greetings M. Rob Norris, as the Président of Starboard Cruise Services in Florida, can you describe your company and give us an idea of its activity?
-* I am the President and Chief Executive Officer of Starboard Cruise Services in Miami. Our company is the largest provider of luxury travel retail boutiques in the world. We are contractors to the main Cruise Lines and run their gift shops onboard the ships. We are under contract; we hire our own staff and have our merchandises on the ships.
How long have you been in Florida? What are the reasons behind this decision?
Our company was founded in 1958 and from the start was located in Miami. All the major world cruise lines have their headquarters in Miami. In particular Carnival Corporation (CCI), Royal Caribbean (RCI) and Norwegian (NCL). Therefore Miami being also the largest Cruise port in the world it was a natural location to implant our offices and warehouses here in Miami.
What is the tendency in your sector? What are your perspectives?
It is not possible to say that the cruise industry is recession proof but the industry has fared well during the past economic crisis. The lines were able to cut the prices of their ticket to insure that the vessels went out with a full load at all times. Therefore the gift shops received the same amount of visitors. We are now seeing an increase in the expenditure per passenger and are sure the economy has turned around. We are looking with confidence toward the future.
