Company / Financial Information

Company / Financial Information

We subscribe to a number of company databases, which are free to University of Birmingham

staff and students. These include:

? AMADEUS

? Investext

? BANKSCOPE

? MarketLine

? Datastream

? PI Navigator

? FAME

? Thomson ONE Banker

In addition, there are a number of free websites which give useful company information.

Each database is different in terms of the type of information it includes (financial accounts, or textual analysis etc), the country coverage, and the functionality (charting, exporting to Excel etc).

This guide gives a brief overview to these resources. Key financial databases are detailed in section 1, other company databases in section 2 and free company information websites in section 3. Sections 4 and 5 offer suggestions on which resource(s) to use and details help available. Many of the company databases also have their own guides, which cover their functionality and how to use them in more detail.

1. Accessing Library Material

To access all Library material, print or electronic, held at the University of Birmingham, please go to FindIt@Bham (). This new service replaces eLibrary and the Library Catalogue.

FindIt@Bham can be used to search for books, ebooks, journals, journal articles and databases (e.g. financial databases and marketing databases). On the home page, there is a drop down menu to the right of the search box to help you identify the information you require as quickly as possible. On the results screen, there are further options to refine your results.

It is recommended that you sign in first using your University (ADF) username and password, particularly if you want to search for journal articles and access databases. To access databases, such as the ones referred to in this guide (with the exception of Datastream), click

on the Find Databases link towards the top right of the screen.

Most electronic resources accessible via FindIt@Bham can be accessed from off-campus. Access off-campus is exactly the same as on-campus.

4. Free Company Information Websites

? Northcote

Northcote provides a list of, and links to, all quoted UK companies. Available via FindIt@Bham > Find Databases (or northcote.co.uk). Find the companies you are after by index, sector, alphabetically or search. These options are all available using the tabs towards the top of the screen. Locate Tesco PLC and see the information available. Note how far the interim and annual reports go back to (all available to download as a PDF).

? Websites of quoted companies

Quoted companies usually have company accounts available on their website in a PDF. The location of these on the website is not always immediately obvious, so you may need to search around a bit, but looking in the `About Us' section is often a good starting point. Look at or to see if you can locate the accounts for Tesco and BP respectively.

? Companies House

For non-quoted UK registered companies, names and addresses can be obtained via Companies House for free. In addition, accounts (and some other information) can also be obtained for a small fee. Companies House is available via FindIt@Bham > Find Databases.

?

This resource provides information on US quoted companies including the latest annual reports. Search and browse reports towards the bottom right of the screen. The report for the previous calendar year for each company is available as HTML and PDF. Available via FindIt@Bham > Find Databases or .

Indicates the suggested order in which to try the resources

Note: Financial data can be presented in different ways. The data set which you decide to use really depends on what you want to do with the data. If you want the data, as published, then the PDF of the annual report maybe better (for example from PI Navigator and Key Note); if you would like `standardised' data so as you can compare the results from different companies easily, then data such as Worldscope (which is one of the datasets available on either Datastream or Thomson ONE Banker for example) would probably be better. If you're unsure which to use, it may be best to seek advice from your tutor or supervisor.
