Locker Use by CUNY Employees

General Policies and Procedures CUNY provides lockers to some employees within designated departments as a convenience for temporary storage of personal belongings during the workday. Managers or supervisors in departments with locker space available to employees will assign lockers to eligible employees and maintain a written record of the assigned locker numbers. Lockers are the property of CUNY. Employees who are assigned CUNY lockers do not own or have a property interest in the assigned lockers. Employees are responsible for all items placed in a locker and CUNY will not be responsible for any loss or damage to items stored in the locker. Employees must empty contents of the assigned locker as instructed by managers or supervisors for the purposes of cleaning and general maintenance. Employees are also required to empty lockers upon termination of employment. Locker Searches and Inspections Assigned lockers are subject to inspection by managers or supervisors at any time and without advanced notice to employees. Such inspections will take place in the presence of the employees to whom the lockers are assigned. Employees are required to make their lockers available for inspection when they are notified of an inspection. CUNY may forcibly open the locker of any employee who fails to comply with this requirement, and in such instances, may do so outside the presence of the employee. Lockers also may be opened at the discretion of the College's or CUNY's Public Safety Director and/or his designee under the following conditions. Lockers will be forcibly opened by CUNY Public Safety personnel if CUNY personnel suspect that the contents of the locker may produce evidence of a violation of state or federal law, CUNY policy or employee misconduct or contain material that poses a safety risk. In such instances the lockers may be opened outside the presence of the employee.
