Reflecting on WritingChoose one of the following topics, and write an essay of at least two pages. You do not have to answer every question for the topic. Doing so may, in fact, make your topic larger than you can really address in two pages. Use them to guide your thinking, not to dictate it, and settle on a concrete subject. How I Write – We all go about writing in idiosyncratic (look it up) ways. We find what works for us and what does not; then, we try to capitalize on the former and minimize the latter. Your task in this paper is to examine and discuss your writing process. You may describe how you go about writing in general, or you may focus on a piece of writing that you have completed recently. As you compose, keep in mind that writing should delight as well as instruct. Use the following questions as a guide:When you are confronted with a writing task, how do you approach it? Do you spend days fretting about it? Immediately jot down ideas and then start playing with them? Perform an online search of relevant terms to get an idea of what’s out there? Think for days and then produce a first draft in one sitting? How do you go about producing a draft? Do you carefully assemble specific materials – like three sharp pencils and a notebook? Put on comfortable clothes and sit down at your laptop? Create an introduction that “will work” and then rework it later? Write, pace the floor, write again, pace again?Do you write with the advice of a particular person – maybe a former teacher – echoing in your mind as you compose? When do you begin to consciously consider your audience? From the beginning? As you revise your first draft? Do you seek advice as you write? Do you talk to others about your ideas and perhaps about how you organize them? Do you read to or show people drafts or parts of drafts? What kinds of feedback do you look for? When others give you suggestions, how do you factor them in?How do you feel when you have completed a paper? Are you simply glad that it is done? Are you convinced that one more pass would produce a better paper?Writing Autobiography – How did you become the writer you are now? In this paper, your task is to explore your history as a writer. Consider the following questions as you plan your paper. Though you need not answer all of the questions, use them as prompts to stimulate your thinking about your engagement with writing and about your writing process. When did you begin writing? How old were you, what did you write about, and how did you go about it? How have innovations in technology changed the way you think or approach writing tasks? As you matured, how did your writing and the ways you went about it change? Did anyone or anything influence your writing? If so, who or what, and how? What kinds of writing do you do now or have you done? Have you written a diary or journal? Letters to a pen pal or family members? E-mail, blogs, Twitter entries, Facebook postings, or other online venues? What are your favorite and least favorite aspects of the writing process? What could you do to make your writing more effective? How do you see writing fitting into your life, both formally and informally, in the future?SuperiorGoodBorderlineNeeds HelpPages (in acceptable font)2 or more1.751.5Anything elseTitleorients the reader to the thesistitle pertinent to the thesis, but not as interestingtitle too generalno titleThesisa declarative sentence that clearly and concisely states the main point; establishes focus that clearly directs the body of the essaya declarative sentence and makes a point, but is a bit too broad; establishes the topic or stance that adequately directs the body of the essaya declarative sentence, but is vague and does not make a concrete point; contains an unfocused topic that lacks clear direction for the body of the essaynot a declarative sentence; inadequately identifies a topic or fails to establish the direction of the essayMLA(see back)No errors1-2 errors3-4 errors5 errors or moreYou may submit your paper in one of three ways: paper copy, Edmodo, email.
