Course Description/ Prerequisites:

← An introductory course in the Hebrew Old Testament, including the study of word forms, sentence structure and basic vocabulary, with some readings in the Old Testament during the second semester (3 credit hours each semester for undergraduate/graduate).

← Prerequisites: GOT 511 Hebrew Grammar (1st semester course). Course is open to seniors and Graduate students who have taken or are currently taking Greek Exegesis.

Required Textbooks

Gary D. Pratico and Miles V. Vanpelt. Basics of Biblical Hebrew Grammar. Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 2001.

Gary D. Pratico and Miles V. Vanpelt. Basics of Biblical Hebrew - Workbook. Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 2001.

Miles V. Van Pelt. Old Testament Hebrew Vocabulary Cards. Grand Rapids: Zondervan.

Recommended: A. Philip Brown II and Bryan W. Smith. A Reader’s Hebrew Bible. Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 2008.

Goals

1. To gain a working knowledge of the grammatical forms of the Hebrew Bible.

2. The lay the necessary foundation for advanced studies in Biblical Hebrew.

3. To help the student use the better Old Testament commentaries and Hebrew study helps which assume a basic understanding of Biblical Hebrew.

4. To help the student appreciate the grammatical/syntactical differences between the Hebrew and English languages and thereby to understand both better.

5. To prepare the student to do advanced work in Hebrew. Students receiving a MABS from Maranatha may finish their seminary programs too soon to take more than the required Hebrew at most seminaries.

Course Objectives

1. To be able to list the basic functions of nouns, adjectives and pronouns in the Hebrew language.

2. To be able to list from memory the noun endings.

3. To be able to parse any weak or strong verb learned as part of the year’s vocabulary.

4. To be able to give the basic meanings English translations of the most commonly occurring Hebrew words.

Course Requirements

1. Class Attendance. Learning a language is like climbing stairs. If you miss a day,

you have made no progress and tomorrow you will have to climb two steps.

2. Memorization. It is impossible to learn a language without memorization.

3. Daily study time. This aids memorization, which is best accomplished through spaced repetition. It is better to spend an hour on Friday, and hour on Saturday, and a 30-minute review on Sunday than it is to spend 3 or 4 hours on Sunday.

4. Class Preparation. Come to class each day ready to participate. You should bring the course text, the workbook, paper (for quizzes/notes), and something to write with to each class.

Course Assignments

1. Workbook Assignments:

a. Homework is due when the bell rings at the beginning of each class.

b. Homework missed due to sickness, etc. must be made up.

c. Homework will be graded as follows (roughly): 1/3-correctness; 2/3-completing the assignment. Explanation:

1) At the beginning of class an attendance sheet will be passed around. You will mark Y if you have completed the assignment and N if you have not completed the assignment.

2) Each day in class that we cover a previous assignment, students will be called on in random order to give their answers. Based on how you do, I will give you a grade for your answer as follows:

4-completely correct.

3-basically correct with 1 or 2 minor mistakes (Parsing an aorist

as an imperfect; treating a nominative as a gentitive, etc.), or a

major mistake (not dealing with a word, misidentifying a verb as

a noun or participle, etc.).

2-partially correct with 2 or more major mistakes or a number

of minor mistakes.

1-an abundance of major/minor mistakes.

0-incorrect (gives little evidence of having completed the

assignment).

d. The workbook may also be collected periodically.

2. Daily Quizzes:

a. Regularly scheduled quizzes will be given over the material. They will be very similar in format to quizzes from first semester.

b. Quizzes may be timed as announced by the instructor.

3. Tests:

a. Review sheets will be given for each test.

b. All tests will be given in two parts on separate days (Part I: Vocabulary; Part II: Grammar with some translation)

c. Cumulative nature of tests:

• Vocabulary is always cumulative.

• Grammar tends to be cumulative, especially in the area of translation. For example, even after we begin to study verbs, every sentence you translate will continue to have nouns, pronouns, etc. which must be translated correctly.

4. Statements regarding collaboration:[1]

• It is acceptable for a student who was absent from class to obtain notes from another student for the day he was absent. It is not acceptable for a student who did not feel like taking notes, or who was working on other class work, to obtain notes [or any type of help] from another student.

• It is acceptable for a group of students, after doing their own initial work, to compare answers and to quiz each other over the test or quiz questions [this is also applicable for workbook assignments]. It is not acceptable for a student who has done little or no personal preparation to join such a study group [or to get answers to the study guides from another student].

• Essentially, this means that you are required to do your own workbook, complete your own study guides, and take your own notes in class. After you have done so, you may then engage in group study efforts.

Attendance Policies

• All attendance policies are according to your academic attendance classification (one-cut, regular undergraduate, or seminary).

Makeup Policies:

• TESTS

a. Tests must be taken when scheduled. If missed because of personal days the normal seminary policy applies. The test grade is lowered 10% the first day, then an additional 3% for every additional day.

b. Tests missed due to excused absences must be made up within one week of the return to school. Providing that the test is made up within one week, no penalty is given. After that period, the normal seminary policy applies (10% plus an additional 3% per day).

• QUIZZES

a. Quizzes missed due to unexcused absences or tardiness to class may not be made up (up to a maximum of 3). They will be dropped from your grade and will not count against you.

b. Quizzes missed beyond the maximum three must be made up or they will be averaged in as zeros.

c. Quizzes missed beyond the maximum three are also subject to the 10%/3% seminary late penalty policy. So, if you are planning to take an unexcused absence, you must take the test in advance of the absence to avoid the late penalty if you have already missed your 3 dropped quizzes.

d. Students are responsible for any material they miss due to absences. For example, if you miss class on Wednesday, you will still be responsible to take the quiz on Thursday. Therefore, it is your responsibility to find out what you missed by contacting the teacher.

• HOMEWORK

a. Since homework is frequently covered in class the day it is due, late homework will be penalized 50%.

b. In order to receive ½ credit, late homework must be completed within 1 week of the due date or before the test date for that particular material (whichever is earlier).

c. After one week, no credit is given for late homework.

d. NOTE: Late homework policies are different from the seminary policy due to the nature of homework assignments.

Course Bibliography

An excellent basic bibliography is included at the end of the course text on pages 411-413.

Daily Study Time Log

• Include anything you do outside of class: Memorization and review time, workbook time, group study sessions, etc.

• This will not affect your grade; it is only for informational purposes.
