Peer-Editing Worksheet: Comparison and Contrast

Read your partner’s essay and answer the following questions in complete sentences. For each, also rate your partner on the 10 point scale – 1 = needs a ton of work 10= nearly perfect.

1. Does the essay have a clearly stated thesis? What is it? Does the author list the things they will discuss? Does the thesis emphasize similarities, differences, or both?

2. Are transitional words and expressions used appropriately to make the points of comparison and contrast clear? List the transitions that are used.

3. Are additional transitions needed? If so, where?

4. How could the introductory paragraph be improved? How does the author “hook” the reader?

5. Does the paper have topic sentences? Are the effective? How could they be improved?

7. Does the writer include sufficient examples to allow the reader to clearly understand the basis of comparison and stated comparisons and contrasts? Give an example of how the writer does this.

8. Does the author introduce all quotes? NO QUOTE BOMBS!!!! If not, note areas where this needs to be done.

9. Are all the quotes cited with the source in parenthesis or title introduced? Is it done PROPERLY?

10. Does each body paragraph have quotes from each myth? Number them (1 or 2) in each paragraph.

11. Look at the SO WHAT analysis. Does the author explain the comparisons/contrasts and provide analysis that relates to the paragraph’s topic? Does it connect to the big picture & make connections on beliefs/culture etc? If not, indicate on the draft where the author needs to give me MORE!

14. Reread the essay and make any grammatical/surface area corrections.
