Critical Questions: How does one feel when giving a compliment and when receiving one? This lesson highlights the understanding and importance of kindness. Also ask them to pay attention to what kinds of compliments were being given. Direct Instructions: After watching the short clip, write the word compliment on chart paper. Ask students to describe what they think compliments are. Some suggestions incase student participation is low: Polite expression of praise Act of kindness EncouragementSecondly, on chart paper write examples of compliments that people can give one another. Thirdly discuss with students how they feel when they receive a compliments and how they feel when they give compliments. While discussing this, refer back to the video clip and discuss the expression of the people in the video. Guided Practice: Once students understand the concept of compliments and the feelings behind it, introduce the activity of Warm Fuzzies. Students will be making an envelope with their names on it. They are allowed to decorate this envelope. These envelopes will be hanging on the wall. For two weeks, there will be an area in the classroom where small pieces of color paper are provided. Students are encouraged to visit that station daily, and often, in their spare time, and use the pieces of papers to write compliments, or thank you notes to their classmates. These comments are anonymous. At the end of the two weeks, the students are allowed to take their envelopes home, and read all the wonderful compliments that their classmates wrote for them. (The teacher will monitor the comments at the end of each day, to discard any inappropriate ones) Independent Practice: After the activity is explained, students are encouraged to begin decorating their envelope. Before they are finished their enveloped, they are also asked to write a compliment to themselves. Evaluations: Student participation Content of compliments Class participation in the discussion Extension: Throughout the week, students are asked to add compliments to everyone’s envelope. They are highly encouraged to write at least one for every member of their class. ................
