Welcome to chemistry!

I look forward to working with all of you. This lab based course is designed to help students develop an understanding of core chemistry concepts, to prepare students for further science classes, and to help all students to develop his or her problem solving skills. Chemistry is an important course for all students, even those who do not wish to become scientists, medical professionals, or engineers. Studying chemistry will help you to develop important skills such as reading abstract information, clearly explaining your thoughts in writing, and problem solving.

What do I need to do to be successful in chemistry?

1. Arrive to class on time and be ready to work, with all necessary materials.

2. Show respect for teachers, students, and our school, including classroom furnishings and lab equipment.

3. No food or drink other than a water bottle is allowed in the chemistry room unless specifically approved by the teacher. Do not drink water or apply makeup during a lab.

4. Follow all lab safety procedures. This includes wearing goggles at all times during lab activities. Students who choose not to follow this policy will be removed from the laboratory, and must make up the lab before or after school.

5. Complete your work.

6. Get extra help outside of class when needed.

Supplies Needed for Class:

• Spiral or composition Chemistry notebook • folder or binder to hold handouts

• Scientific calculator • Fully charged computer

Safety:

You must always dress appropriately for the lab. This includes goggles, closed toe shoes, lab aprons, and any long hair must be tied back into a ponytail. You must be familiar will all of the safety rules and pass a safety quiz before beginning any lab work. Failure to follow safety rules or to take proper safety precautions will result in removal from the lab. You will be required to complete the experiment before or after school.

Homework:

Daily homework assignments are due at the beginning of class. Some homework assignments must be completed in your chemistry notebook and some must be completed on Canvas. Due dates can be found on Canvas. Students will sometimes earn credit by completing all of the homework problems with care, but on other days they will have a short quiz to show that they understand the concepts involved.

Academic dishonesty:

Academic dishonesty is any attempt made by a student to misrepresent his or her level of achievement, or aiding another student in such an attempt. Under no circumstances is it permissible for a student to transfer to his or her test, paper, or project something that has been written or stated by someone else in an attempt to earn credit for it. “We worked together” never produces nor justifies identical papers bearing different names. If a student is unsure as to whether something would be considered cheating, he or she needs to ask. When working in the lab, all students in a group must record data. Copying another student’s data is cheating. All portions of a lab report must be a student’s original work. Never allow another student to read or email a copy of your lab report to another student. Exchanging computers or logging into another student’s account is considered cheating. You must cite any ideas that are not your own. The first instance of cheating will result in a grade of zero on the test, assignment or lab.

Attendance Policy:

Regular attendance is crucial to your learning and success. Students who have approved absences for activities, doctor’s appointments, or other meetings must check Canvas and make arrangements with the teacher to make up work before the day that they will miss. When a student is absent due to illness, homework assigned prior to absence is due upon return. Any work assigned while the student is absent is due one week after the student returns. It is a student’s responsibility to check Canvas to get any makeup work. Labs are available for makeup for one week only. Labs must be made before school, after school, or at another time by appointment. Students are expected to turn in all assignments on the due date when they are present for any part of the day. If a student exceeds a combination of 5 absences and/or tardies in any one class within a term, a student will receive a citizenship mark of Unsatisfactory Attendance (UA) for that class unless the student makes up the excess tardies or absences by attending Attendance School. For athletic, school activity, and extracurricular eligibility purposes, a student cannot have a UA on their transcript and be eligible to participate, play, tryout, or perform.

Late Work:

Late homework can be turned in for half credit up to one week after the due date. Late chemistry notebooks and lab reports earn a 10% deduction for each class meeting that they are late. Mrs. S is reasonable person who wants you to do your best. Ask for a one class extension on a lab report, your chemistry notebook, or another major assignment if you are having an unusually busy week.

Grading Procedure:

Students should check their grade regularly. Canvas will always show a students’ most up to date grade. Canvas is no longer transferring a student’s grade to SIS, therefore SIS will only be used for midterm and term final grades. Most assignments can be redone or resubmitted up to one month after the original due date. Tests and quizzes may be retaken up to one month after the original due date. Check Canvas for due dates. Students’ semester grades in chemistry are computed by dividing the points they earn by the total points possible. Grades are based on the following scale:

A: 90-100% B: 80-89% C: 70-79% D: 60-69% F: below 60%

Hall passes:

Students are expected to conduct school business during passing periods, lunch, or before/after school. Students should only ask to use the restroom during individual work time. Students should not request hall passes during the first or last ten minutes of class. Passes are a privilege. Only students with good citizenship will be allowed to use a pass.
