Course Cover Sheet - Algebra 1

Course Description:

Core Connections Algebra is the first course in a sequence of college preparatory mathematics. It focuses on developing fluency with solving linear equations, inequalities and systems. These skills are extended to solving quadratic equations, exploring linear, quadratic, and exponential functions graphically, numerically, symbolically, and as sequences, and by using regression techniques to analyze the fit of models to distributions of data.

Instructor:

Mrs. Jodee M. Rupple (970) 348-5856 jrupple@

BA: Mathematics University of Colorado, Boulder 1994

MA: Mathematics University of Northern Colorado 2004

Course Curriculum: CPM Core Connections Algebra (ebooks.)

Students will be accessing the textbook online. If a student does not have internet access, there are a limited number of hard copy text books to check out. The hard copy books do NOT have the interactive features and support that are online.

Grading System:

Letter grades will be earned as follows:

90% + = A 80-89.99% = B 70-79.99% = C 60-69.99% = D 00-59.99% = F

Assessments (Individual Quizzes, Unit Exams, District Assessments) 65% of course grade

• The opportunity to improve quiz scores for a maximum C (70%) will be made available to every student who has completed and turned in ALL homework assignments in that unit.

• The process to improve assessment scores must be completed with the tutor or with Mrs. Rupple.

• There will NOT be an opportunity to improve the Semester Final Exam or District Assessment scores.

Team Work (Participation, Team Quizzes, Projects, etc.) 15% of course grade

• Students will be expected to be engaged and contributing in their groups.

• Team quizzes will be used to assess how students work together to solve problems AND to evaluate mathematical understanding.

Individual Work (Homework, Notebooks, Journals, etc.) 20% of course grade

• Individual practice assignments are given daily. On average, they will require approximately 15-20 minutes at home to complete.

• Homework answers will be reviewed daily, with the opportunity to make corrections before it is collected. There is no reason that a student should have less than 100% on all homework assignments!

• Deadlines and due dates will be announced during class.

• NO Late assignments will be accepted.

Additional instructional support:

• Students are expected to utilize the academic seminar period and tutors provided within the daily schedule.

• CPM online textbooks provide homework help:

• Email Mrs. Rupple for additional support or ANY questions.

• Check your grade weekly on the Early College Academy webpage (Infinite Campus Portal).

Attendance:

• Your first and strongest strategy for success is to fully participate in class EVERY DAY!

• Excused Absences - Planned: If you will miss class because of a planned event, i.e. school activity, family event, doctor’s appointment, you must get the day’s assignment prior to your absence. This work is due on the same due date given to the rest of the class. Maintaining this practice will ensure that you are keeping up with your classmates in the learning of the content.

• Excused Absences - Unplanned: If you miss class because of an unexpected event, i.e. illness, family emergency, contact Mrs. Rupple by email for your assignment. You are allowed two days for each class missed to turn in your make-up work.

• Unexcused Absences: If your absence from school is unexcused, you are still required to make up any work missed, but are only entitled to partial credit for that work (50% of original value). This applies to any teamwork, homework assignments or assessments.

Tardiness:

• Students are expected to be in their seats, prepared to begin class, at the appropriate time.

• Habitual tardiness will be addressed by Mrs. Rupple on a case by case basis.

Behavioral Expectations: POWER

• Mutual respect and courtesy among all members of this classroom community – teachers, students, tutors, administrators, visitors, etc.

• Respect of the learning environment including the building, all equipment and furniture, etc.

• Ear buds and cell phones will be allowed at Mrs. Rupple’s discretion. Cell phones will NOT be allowed to be used as calculators on assessments.

• ONLY Water is allowed. No food or other drink is allowed in the classroom.

• NO BATHROOM / HALL PASSES! Personal needs must be addressed during the passing period. In case of emergency, be responsible for your needs.

• Standards of behavior and dress will otherwise be aligned with the current District 6 student handbook.

Students are expected to be active and responsible participants in their own education.

Academic Integrity:

Cheating / academic dishonesty denies the value of education, damages the ethical character of the individual student, and undermines the integrity of our school community. Early College Academy students are expected to demonstrate personal integrity and intellectual honesty in all academic work.

Academic dishonesty is defined as any attempt to gain an unfair academic advantage or recognition to which one is not entitled, or to assist others to do so. Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, cheating, plagiarism, collusion, falsifying academic records and the misrepresentation of facts.

Consequences

• The teacher will discuss the violation concerns with the student. An immediate consequence will be NO credit for the work in question. This has the potential to significantly affect a student’s overall class grade and ability to earn credit for the course.

• The parent(s) will be notified.

• The building principal and academic dean will be notified. A disciplinary note will be placed in the student’s behavior file on Infinite Campus.

• Other specific consequences will be assigned on a case by case basis, in consultation with the building principal, and academic dean.
