Subject: 3rd Grade Reading

Weeks: 4th Nine Weeks Group 3

Unit of Study: Establish Purpose Essential Questions:

? How do we establish the purpose of the story we are reading? ? How can an author persuade a reader? ? In what ways do authors make connections with readers?

TEKS/Essence Statements: Figure 19: Reading/Comprehension Skills. Students use a flexible range of metacognitive reading skills in both assigned and independent reading to understand an author's message. Students will continue to apply earlier standards with greater depth in increasingly more complex texts as they become selfdirected, critical readers. The student is expected to: (A) establish purposes for reading selected texts based upon own or others' desired outcome to enhance comprehension; Critical Skills/Postsecondary Goals: This section needs to be completed based on the students in your class. Instruction/Classroom Activities:

Small Group Instruction: The teacher will introduce 3 new vocabulary word cards to the class and describe each one for the students. Can have picture representations for each if needed.

Authors write for many reasons. Some of the following are:

to entertain

Entertain means to amuse someone. fictional stories, comics, poems, jokes, riddles

Inform means to give someone information about something

to inform

news reports, research papers, encyclopedias, school newsletters, instructions, pamphlets from health clinics, maps, timelines, schedules, charts, graphs

to persuade

Persuade means to try to convince someone to think the same way you do. advertisements, newspaper editorials, junk mail, posters

The teacher will then have an example of each to pass around for the student- a fictional book, a recipe, and an advertisement. Show each example one at a time and discuss with the class what the purpose of each type is. Pass each around so the students can see and touch each example.

Next have the teacher pull up the website below. Review the types of purposes and read the following examples and have the students decide if it is to entertain, to inform, to persuade

Pull up the next website and play the game with the class. Ask each student one at a time and have the student try to shoot the basketball by using the wireless keyboard. May have picture representations of the 3 types of purpose to help the students choose.
