COURSE DESCRIPTION:

By the end of the course, students will be able to complete the following objectives:

● Define information technology (IT) and describe the components of a personal computer.

● Describe how to protect people, equipment, and environments from accidents, damage, and

contamination.

● Perform a step-by-step assembly of a desktop computer.

● Explain the purpose of preventive maintenance and identify the elements of the troubleshooting process.

● Install and navigate an operating system.

● Configure computers to connect to an existing network.

● Upgrade or replace components of a laptop based on customer needs.

● Install and share a printer.

● Implement basic physical and software security principles.

● Apply good communications skills and professional behavior while working with customers.

● Perform preventive maintenance and advanced troubleshooting.

● Assess customer needs, analyze possible configurations, and provide solutions or recommendations for hardware, operating systems, networking, and security.

Certifications

The IT Essentials (ITE) 5.0 curriculum helps students prepare for the CompTIA A+ certification exams 220-901 and 220-902.

● CompTIA A+ 220-901 covers the fundamentals of computer technology, installation and configuration of PCs, laptops and related hardware, and basic networking.

● CompTIA A+ 220-902 covers the skills required to install and configure PC operating systems, as well as configuring common features such as network connectivity and email for Android and Apple iOS mobile operating systems

Requirements:

Students are expected to be in class and participating in labs and activities. If you must miss a class for any reason you must arrange makeup work with the instructor. Notes and other handouts will be posted online. If for any reason a student misses a test arrangements must be made with the instructor. Failure to make arrangements for makeup tests will result in a zero grade for that test. Installing and using software on lab computers that has not been approved by the instructor is prohibited. The only acceptable materials that can be used on a test are the course materials and any handouts from me.

Grading and Evaluation Criteria

25% of the grade is based on a midterm and a final examination. Both examinations are cumulative and given in a varied format.

25% of the grade is based on quizzes.

25% of the grade is based on Study Guide submissions

25% on work submitted via the assignment dropbox in D2L

Grade is scale is:

100 – 90 = A

89 – 80 = B

79 – 70 = C

69 – 60 = D

59 – 0 = F

*10% will be subtracted from any late work turned in within two weeks. 25% will be subtract after that. After a month, it will not be accepted. Please respect this policy and turn your work in on time.

Required Textbooks:

The text book is provided to you online through Cisco’s website () . Students will be provided with a username and password to log into Cisco’s website to get required reading material and take tests. All study guides, lecture notes and assignments will be posted on my website at .

Two exams are necessary to be certified: CompTIA A+ Essentials, exam code 220-901; and CompTIA A+ Practical Application, exam code 220-902. It is recommended to purchase CompTIA A+ 220-901 and 220-902 Practice Questions Exam Cram (5th Edition)

To help with your preparation for the certification exam. Please be sure to go to to make sure are purchasing the correct book. This will be shown to you in class.
