Job DescriptionJob titleResearch AssociateDepartment/SchoolPhysicsJob familyEducation and ResearchGrade7Reporting toAnton Souslov, Principal Investigator (PI)Responsible forThere may be a requirement for co-supervision of doctoral or undergraduate students LocationUniversity of Bath premises Background and contextThe postdoctoral researcher will carry out impactful research within the general area of theoretical and/or computational soft matter, and with a unique focus on active solids. This research will involve a combination of fundamental theory for the mechanics of solids far from equilibrium and numerical modelling of these materials. The postdoctoral researcher will be guided towards taking a leadership role in project implementation, producing reputable publications from project outcomes, and presenting this work at internationally recognised conferences and workshops. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to engage a range of research topics within the Souslov lab from modelling the mechanics of soft materials to designing new states of matter. More broadly, the researcher will be encouraged to contribute to a thriving intellectual environment by collaborating with other researchers at Bath, within the UK, and internationally on topics relevant to soft matter, and by exploring the potential impact for their discoveries outside of academia.Job purposeTo provide subject-specific research expertise and undertake specific research work to a Principal Investigator (PI)/Co-Investigator (CI) and their research team for a specified grant/project. Main duties and responsibilities 1Conduct research in soft matter theory individually and within collaborations. Use the appropriate computational and theoretical tools necessary to carry out this research. Begin to take a leading role in the research project and to design new research directions.2Communicate scientific results through conference presentations3Write-up research results and contribute to publications in high-quality peer-reviewed academic literature.4Manage projects: e.g., schedule and meet project milestones; participate in regular discussions with collaborative partners5Regularly hold meetings with advisor individually and/or as part of the advisor’s research group meetings6Acquire and develop a deep and broad knowledge of scientific literature of the research topics and, more broadly, of advances in soft matter.7Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research, with assistance of a mentor if required.8Participate in creating a vibrant research atmosphere, for example by attending seminars in theory and in soft matter. You will from time to time be required to undertake other duties of a similar nature as reasonably required by your line manager. You are required to follow all University policies and procedures at all times and take account of University guidance.
