SYLLABUS Middle School Business and Computer Science
(Grade 8)
Course Information
The name of this course is Business and Computer Science. The class is located in room #102. It meets Monday through Friday from 7:55 to 8:41 or 8:44-9:31.
Homework will be assigned that will require the student to use a computer to practice skills learned in class and research information needed for assignments.
Missed assignments due to excused absence may be made up within three days upon return to school. Assignments missed for any other reasons may not be made up.
Students are expected to be respectful, responsible, and ready at all times. More specifically, our Class Rules are as follows:

Texts, Books, Readings, and Materials
The textbook for this course is "Micro Mastery Keyboarding & Word Processing Applications". We will also use the Internet for various assignments. We will also use "Financial Fitness for Life" workbooks as a supplement. Students will need a one inch notebook, notebook paper, and black pens. A flash drive would be helpful, but not required.
Course Description and Objectives
Using project-based instruction, students are introduced to the principles of business in the 21st century while refreshing their keyboarding skills. This course should also help students to use computers effectively in their lives, thus providing a connection of computer science and business careers.
In this course, middle school students build a knowledge base of computer applications, information systems, internet safety, 21st century skills, and business and computer science careers of the 21st century.

During the first nine weeks of the semester, students will be evaluated on proper keyboarding techniques. They will also demonstrate the professional, ethical, and safe use of the Internet. By creating projects, students will show advanced mastery of computer application software. During the second nine weeks of the semester, students will explore multiple career paths and their interrelatedness and become acquainted with the array of careers in society. Students will interview local business owners and report on how they started up their business and how the business is marketed. Students will examine the basics of economics and personal finance. Bank personnel and financial advisors will be invited to speak to students in these areas.
Grading/Evaluation
Daily grades will be given upon completion of class assignments and count for 40% of the student's grade. Homework is 5% of student's grade. Notebook checks will be done randomly. Completed notebook entries will count 15% of the student's grade. Quizzes will be given at the end of weeks 2, 4, 6, and 8 of each nine-week grading period. They will count 20%. The nine-week exam, project, or semester exam will count 20% of the student's grade.
Students may earn an extra point on any individual assignment/quiz/test of their choice by wearing business attire to school on "Work Wednesdays".
Documentation of Work
Students will turn in their binders for notebook checks. Assignments and research papers will be saved on the computer and printed for grading. Printed tests will be turned in. Presentations will be given in class from flash drives or printed as notes when directed.
