State Superintendent Announces Computer Science Winners



For Immediate Release:February 3, 2020State Superintendent Announces Computer Science Competition WinnersRICHMOND — Superintendent of Public Instruction James Lane today announced the winners of the Computer Science in Your Neighborhood competition. The competition is a joint project of the Virginia Department of Education, the Science Museum of Virginia and CodeVA. The contest challenged students to create digital products — including videos, websites and applications — about their interest in computer science and the role it plays in their daily lives, families and communities. “I congratulate all of the winning students — and their teachers — for their enthusiasm for this exciting field and their willingness to put their computer science skills to the test,” Lane said. “I look forward to this competition growing as schools continue to integrate the content of Virginia’s nationally recognized Computer Science Standards of Learning into their instructional programs.”Submissions were received in November and December from 135 students and classes. Winning entries were selected from each of the commonwealth’s eight Superintendent’s Regions, as follows:Region 1 Myra Motrynczuk, Gordon Elementary, Chesterfield County Rithanya Saravanan, J.R. Tucker High, Henrico County and Kaylie Nichols, CodeRVA Regional High Region 2 Andrew Quiney, Chittum Elementary, Chesapeake Timur Bolukbas, Great Bridge Middle, Chesapeake Region 3Mark Gooch, Cople Elementary, Westmoreland County Region 4Joyce Matthew’s class, Braddock Elementary, Fairfax County Alora Powell, River Bend Middle, Loudoun County Region 5Austin Sanders and Alex Farrish, Wilson Elementary, Augusta County Region 6Blanca Elias, Andrew Lewis Middle, Salem Region 7Blenna Patterson’s class, McHarg Elementary, Radford Ian Rhudy, Tazewell High, Tazewell County Region 8Skylar Maranto, Amelia Middle, Amelia County Winning students will each receive a certificate recognizing their achievement and a laptop computer provided by CodeVA. Winning classes will receive a set of classroom robots, also courtesy of CodeVA.# # # ................
