The student will learn to design, document, prepare, enter, compile, debug, and execute C++ programs of moderate sophistication. Topics include: structured programming, data types, and input/output in C++.Course ObjectivesThe student will have a working knowledge of the C++ language syntax and semantics and be familiar with the different operators available. The student will demonstrate the ability to design, document, write, enter, compile, debug and execute C++ programs. The student will become familiar with the handling of groups of related data in various data structures in the computer's memory and the various addressing modes available in C++ used to create, access, and manipulate these data structures. The student will be able to select an appropriate data structure for solving a particular problem. The student will become familiar with the use of structured, top-down design and structured programming techniques, using the C++ language. Programs will be designed as one or more functional modules to perform a specific task required by the overall program. The student will become familiar with the history of C++, its major application areas, and its utilization in modern business computer systems.Tentative SchedulePlease see Lessons tab for quiz due dates and Calendar for due dates for TESTS. Quizzes are due each week as well as a programming project assignment.Instructor reserves right to modify schedule.Course RequirementsDISABILITY: If you wish to receive special accommodations as a student with a documented disability, please contact the Learning Specialist on St. Pete Gibbs Campus, Gene Oskamp, ?AD 120, (727)341-4316. This will result in a grade of Zero (0) for?programs which do not compile.?All assignments must be graded to receive a grade of "A". Final Letter Grade will be lowered by one letter grade per ungraded assignment. You will NOT pass this course by taking the chapter quizzes alone. To pass a programming course, you must be able to write programs.Make sure you understand?my Academic Integrity policy as stated in this syllabus as well as the?Academic Honesty policy posted by?this school. than one student submitting code which I deem is the same algorithm will both receive a grade of ZERO?for that assignment. If more than one assignment from the same students is considered by me to be too similar to be unique, those students will be expelled from the course. No code will be accepted or graded which does not compile.Best way to reach me is through ANGEL course eMail. The Discussions are for student to student communications except for the first 2. Those discussions are required.Late assignments will be penalized 2 out of 10 points per each week late. The?clock starts at Tuesday, midnight each week as the first week. Tuesday the week after is week 2. I will NOT grade late projects beyond 2 weeks late. Programming Challenge assignments over?2 weeks late will receive a ZERO.?Attendance PolicyIf you are in your third attempt at completing this course, you will be given a WF grade at any point that you exceed the maximum number of allowed absences. ATTENDANCE/ACTIVE PARTICIPATION/WITHDRAWAL POLICIESIn January 2008 the college implemented a new attendance policy. Revised Board of Trustees rule 6Hx23-4.30 replaces the information found on pages 136 and 137 in the Student Rights and Responsibilities section of the 2008-09 Student Planner and Handbook. Each instructor must exercise professional judgment to determine if you are actively participating in class. Faculty will publish their own personal participation/attendance policies in their syllabi. This policy will be used to determine grades. If you are not actively participating in class as defined in an instructor’s syllabus, you will be reported to the administration during the week following the voluntary withdrawal date.Instructors will verify that you are in attendance during the first two weeks of class. If you are classified as a “No Show” for both of the first two weeks, you will be administratively withdrawn.Immediately following the 60% point of the term, each instructor will verify which students are actively participating in class as defined in the course syllabus. If you are classified as not meeting the criteria for active class participation, you will be administratively withdrawn with a “WF.” You will be able to withdraw yourself at any time during the term. Requests submitted after the 60% deadline, however, will result in a “WF.” You and your instructor will automatically receive notification through SPC e-mail whenever a withdrawal occurs. FEDERAL GUIDELINES RELATED TO FINANCIAL AID AND TOTAL WITHDRAWAL FROM THE COLLEGEThe U.S. Department of Education has implemented rules for students who obtain a Pell Grant, Stafford Loan, and/or Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant and subsequently totally withdraw from the college. The rule requires you to refund to the Department of Education a portion of your financial aid if you completely withdraw from St. Petersburg College before the 60% point in the term. You also may be required to repay funds to the college if you are identified as not actively participating in all of your classes, or if you do not receive at least one final passing grade (D or higher). Should you consider totally withdrawing from all classes before the published withdrawal date, it is important that you consult the Financial Assistance Services office on your home campus to understand your options and the consequences of total withdrawal.?Academic IntegrityStudents are expected to respect and uphold the standards of honesty in submitting written work to instructors. Though occurring in many forms, plagiarism in essence involves the presentation of another person’s work as if it were the work of the presenter. Any cheating or plagiarism will result in disciplinary action to be determined by the instructor based on the severity and nature of the offense. It is the student’s responsibility to review the online Student Conduct Code, Student Expectations, and Academic Honesty Policy, and comply with them.In courses that involve the student creating code, such as this course, I will NOT accept projects which contain code from students which I deem has been plagiarized. If you are working with someone be sure your code, especially the algorithm, is unique to your project. I will give a grade of zero (0) for code that has been submitted by more than one student to both student projects. ?If you receive 2 zeros, you will be expelled from the course with an "F" grade.MiscellaneousEvery student is expected to complete the Student Survey of Instruction survey which will be available online about three quarters of the way through the class. The survey is used to determine the strengths and weakness of the course material and instruction. It is anonymous, and students will be able to check NA to every question if they wish to do so. There will be a point in the class, however, where students will not be permitted to move on to the next part of the course without completing the survey, and we hope that all students will take the time and provide us with the evaluation feedback which is so helpful in improving our courses and College. Log OffIn order to better serve our?students we are asking that students use the logoff button when completing online course work. By logging off, ANGEL server space is freed, and therefore, optimizing the system. In addition, logging off will more accurately record students’ time involved in the online course.Emergency PreparednessIn the event that a hurricane or other natural disaster causes significant damage to the St. Petersburg College facilities, you may be provided the opportunity to complete your course work online. Following this event please visit the college website for an announcement of the College’s plan to resume operations. This syllabus is currently available in ANGEL for your convenience.
