HAPPY TENTH ANNIVERSARY--IMMACULATE CONCEPTION …

Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” Matthew 9:37-38

Dear Parents,Top of Form

I’ve never had the slightest doubt that I would be a different human being had I not attended a Catholic school. There remain powerful images from my childhood as my faith was warmly wrapped around me like a soft blanket. As I entered the school building, my eyes would immediately fall upon the statue of the Blessed Virgin who greeted me. I voraciously consumed every single library book about individual lives of the saints who still figure prominently in my life as I make daily decisions drawing upon their intercession. I finished my eighth grade year convinced that I had a vocation to become a sister. While God ultimately had other plans for my life, I knew one thing for sure—that my life would be focused on a life of serving; something that was imprinted on my heart in my Catholic school.

It’s 2019. In my 18 years as principal of Our Lady’s School, I often reflect and wonder whether the students who pass through this place of faith have been impacted in the way I was. While parents remain the primary educators, and while teachers remain strong influences in the lives of children, at the end of the day, it’s all about free will and choosing our individual paths. In communicating with our alumni, it seems as if many have left with those same foundational values built on faith. Yes, I remain convinced that attending a Catholic school is a life-changing experience.

Of course we continue to hold in prayer our seminarian Brett Meztler, ICCS Class of 2008, as he continues with his discernment about the priesthood. In spite of the fact that we are still in our infancy as a school, being established in 1995 through the efforts of some amazing visionary folks here in Denton, there are so many alumni who are making a difference by building strong families, serving in their communities, and through mission.

After graduating from Belmont Abbey College in North Carolina, Hannah Thies, ICCS Class of 2010, has been accepted to Baylor University Law School. However, she decided to take a two-year hiatus so she could become a FOCUS missionary at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. Hannah was among several other ICCS alumni and young people from our area to attend this past weekend’s SEEK Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana. SEEK is the national conference for FOCUS.

“As a missionary, my greatest desire is to lead all students to Christ. My life has been transformed by Jesus, and I want nothing more than to bring this joy to others and introduce them to the life-changing message of the Gospel.”

FOCUS missionary Hannah Thies, ICCS Class of 2010

As we continue to reflect on our own faith walk and how it has impacted our lives, sometimes even we don’t know if there was an exact moment or experience that made us who we are today. It could just be that we truly are the sum total of all of those moments in our lives where “way leads upon way” as Robert Frost so eloquently states. May Our Lady’s School continue to provide those many moments to our students and families so we can all become dedicated workers in HIS vineyard. Way to go Hannah and to all of our ICCS alumni! Blessings and prayers for 2019!

In Him, Elaine Schad, ICCS Principal

As you clean out toy chests, shelves, closets, and play rooms to make room for the new items from Christmas, think of the less fortunate. Have your children go through things with you and items gently used that can be used by the less fortunate can be donated. You can donate to any charity that works with children and teach your children to give to others! God bless! (from Mr. Cuttica)

New Year … New Start

Dean’s Dispatch … January 2019

As we begin the New Year, we need to reflect and remind ourselves of our goals as parents, grandparents, and teachers. Resolutions tend to go by the wayside by the end of January, at least mine usually do! Perhaps if we view them as goals they will have a more lasting effect.

Raising our children as Catholic Christians, we of course teach them the 10 Commandments. Hopefully we show our children how to live through the Beatitudes. We also have a responsibility to model and teach them the Precepts of the Church. There are seven of them, and they help to make us Catholics.

Precepts of the Church

• To attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation

• To fast and abstain from meat on appointed days

• To confess one’s sins at least once a year

• To receive Holy Eucharist during Easter time

• To contribute to the support of the Church

• To observe the laws of the Church concerning marriage

• To join in the missionary spirit and apostolate of the church

Parents accept a serious responsibility at the baptism of their children. They are the primary teachers of the faith. Young children learn best by example so we need to live by these “rules.” A young child can’t drive himself to church on Sunday, or to confession on a Saturday; therefore, we must be sure to provide that for our children. The few days of fasting and abstaining should be part of the household routine. Are we teaching our children to take a portion of their allowance to give to the support of the Church? We need to do some soul searching and make sure we are giving our children the gift of faith, the beautiful gift of our Catholic heritage.

Wishing you all a blessed, healthy, and happy 2019! Paul Cuttica, Dean of Students

Hola!!

(From her new home in Georgia)

Cecy Miranda

Catholic Schools Week

At the end of this month, we will be celebrating National Catholic School Week. Educating in faith is not an easy task. Parents, before anyone else, are responsible for the education in the faith of their children. Life is not the same for those who live with Faith as for those who live without it. Values such as respect, charity, generosity, and humility are essential in the spiritual formation of our children. Choosing a good school is without a doubt one of the most important decisions you will take thinking about your little ones. Choosing a Catholic School requires an extra cost, a monthly payment, and payments that imply a sacrifice that will bear fruit forever. Some children are very fortunate to receive an education in a Catholic School.

What is National Catholic Schools Week?

“Since 1974, National Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. It starts the last Sunday in January and runs all week, which in 2019 is January 27 - February 2. The theme for the National Catholic Schools Week 2019 is “Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed.” Schools typically observe the annual celebration week with Masses, open houses and other activities for students, families, parishioners and community members. Through these events, schools focus on the value Catholic education provides to young people and its contributions to our church, our communities and our nation” (National Catholic Educational Association).

ICCS Theme of the Year:

"Do not be afraid of holiness. It will take away none of your energy, vitality, or joy,"

Pope Francis
