Everybody lived in little cliques, the Polish, the Ukrainian, the Italian, the Chinese, the Russian. So they would help each other out, whatever. Maybe one knew a few words more than the other. They used to live, but I don’t know how many, maybe ten, twelve people in one room because one was helping the other to get established here.

When I was in elementary school, I wanted to make friends with American people. At first I come, I don’t speak English, I just want to say “Hi!” And then they just walk away. They gave me a look and then what’s wrong with that. And then the American people & Spanish people, they start calling me “Chink! Chink!” And after that I know that people don’t like immigrants in America.

Short Answer_____/20 Essay____/50

-----------------------

The children of Italian immigrants wish most of all to become Americans. Their parents came to America because they heard there were jobs. The children make haste to adopt the American customs & speech. In fact, they worry & grieve their parents, who cannot understand or keep pace with them. Parents get upset because they fear that the children will forget the ways of the “old country”. It is not a little tragic sometimes, this conflict between the children & their elders.

Roland Damani, 1938

Where would your mines have been dug & worked, where would your great iron industries & constructions have been were it nor for the immigrants? It is the immigrant that bears the burden of hard labor & has contributed his full share to the building up of our country

-Samuel McMillan 1908
