[Pages:1]Concrete Poem Project

As you know from the examples we reviewed in class, a concrete poem is a poem whose shape imitates its subject. For this assignment, you will create your own concrete poem using Google Drawing.

Step One: Choose a topic Your topic should be somehow related to fall. It can be about sports, holidays, activities, anything that has to do with the season.

Step Two: Brainstorm words Once you've chosen a topic, brainstorm as many words as you can that relate to that topic. You will use those words to write your poem

Step Three: Write a poem! (First Draft) *Have done by Tuesday Write out your poem "normally" in lines and stanzas. You must submit either a hard copy or a Google Doc of your written poem. You are not allowed to start on your second draft until your first draft has been approved. Remember -- the more lines your poem has, the easier it will be to create a shape with it! (hint: 10 lines are not enough)

Step Four: Choose a shape (Second Draft) *Have done by Wednesday Pick a shape that relates to your poem (if your poem is about cross country running, perhaps a shoe?). By hand, sketch out a rough draft of how your poem will look when converted into its shape. You are not allowed to start on your Drawing until your second draft has been approved.

Step Five: Begin Drawing! (Final Draft) Using Google Drawing, create a concrete poem. This will require some patience and experimentation! Take your time with this activity -- do not try to finish in 10 minutes or less. You must hand in your finished product by the end of the day on Friday. Submit to this form.

Grades based on:

1. Topic/shape choice (pumpkins & apples are automatic C's unless they are SPECTACULAR!) Try to come up with an original idea.

2. Quality of work ? this includes the amount of detail in the poem & the degree that the topic was described. (Do not write a vague, non-descript poem)

3. Requirements ? 4 colors, readable fonts, heading, rough draft complete, followed directions, original work, concrete format, etc.

4. Conventions ? correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, capitalization (if appropriate & not a part of the poem)

5. Neatness/appeal ? (important aspect) --Keep in mind that the image is just as essential as the wording in concrete poetry. SO, use colors, spacing, & fonts to create the best image that you can for your topic.

6. Grades also based on -- Use of time, following directions, on task, having materials, meeting deadlines, etc. Be creative & unique!
