Chapter 2: Logic

3.2 Conditional Statements –

Examples:

• If Mary cleans her room, then she will go to the concert.

• If it is sunny, then we will swim.

• If it is July, then it is summer.

• If a figure is a square, then it has four equal sides.

• I will get a good grade in math, if I study hard.

• When you need help, ask your friend.

Parts of a conditional:

Writing Statements in Conditional form.

1) Congruent segments are segments that have the same measure.

2) All students like pizza

3) A scalene triangle is a triangle that has no congruent sides.

Conditional Statements, Converse & Truth Values

Converse – Switch the “if” sentence and the “then” sentence’

Conditional #1: If a figure is a square, then it has four sides.

Converse:

Conditional #2: If two angles have equal measure, then they are congruent.

Converse:

Conditional #3: If lines lie in the same plane, then they are coplanar.

Converse:

Good mathematical definitions (and theorems) are bi-directional. If you put an accurate definition into "if - then" form, the definition will be true when the portions of the "if" and "then" statements are exchanged.

Rewrite each definition in conditional form, and its converse.

Perpendicular lines are lines that intersect to form right angles.

Conditional:

Converse:

An isosceles triangle is a triangle with two congruent sides.

Conditional:

Converse:

Rewrite the conditionals as statements, written two different ways, by interchanging the hypothesis and conclusion.

If a triangle has a right angle, then it is a right triangle.

If 2 angles are complementary, their sum is 90o.

If a triangle has three equal sides, it is equilateral.
