VANARFE- HOW TO MAKE CONDOLENCE CALLS AS A SERVICE OFFICER

When notified of the death of an active or retired member, or of their annuitant spouse, service officers should make condolence calls. Grieving people are vulnerable, so be careful to do no harm, do all the good you can, and respect the boundaries of others.

Remember, you represent NARFE as a service officer, which gives you a role even if otherwise you may be a stranger to the bereaved family.

Respect your own limits. A phone call, a card or letter, a personal doorstep visit, a conversation at funeral or memorial services, are all possibilities.

• Introduce yourself by name and as a NARFE service officer.

• Offer “I’m sorry for your loss”

• Avoid saying hurtful things or well- meaning religious phrases that may offer no comfort at all to those who are grieving, hurt or in shock.

• Instead, try listening sympathetically and/ or offering help as a service officer of NARFE association.

• Leave a contact phone number, email address, or NARFE resources that may be helpful in the days to come.

• Follow up condolences on behalf of fellow NARFE members, a second time. Add “If there’s any way I can help, please let me know.”

• Hang up, sign the card or letter, offer goodbye, or otherwise leave as soon as decently possible. That may be all that you can do, and all that is needed.

• If later there is a question or other follow –up that they need, respond as well as you can, as soon as you can!

• If you do not know, say I “don’t know.” Call area, state or national resource people. Refer callers to federal agencies that they need to contact, anyway.
