Carolinas Communication Association Business Meeting MinutesSeptember 28, 2019University of South Carolina at BeaufortCall to OrderThe meeting was called to order by President John McArthur at 12:30 pm. Approval of the MinutesThe minutes from the 2018 Convention Business Meeting were approved. Officer Reports President John McArthur (Furman University) expressed gratitude for the Executive Council and to Caroline Sawyer (USC-Beaufort) for CCA Conference 2019. John stated that it was a good year for the Executive Council, providing tremendous support for conference planner, Caroline, and Annual editor, Jenni Simon, (UNC-Greensboro). There were no questions.1st Vice President and Conference Planner Caroline Sawyer (USC-Beaufort) thanked everyone for their attendance. It was the first conference for the Hilton Head Island Campus of USC-Beaufort. There were 76 submissions, 52 of which were accepted (68% acceptance rate); 17 panel presentations; 5 GIFTS presentations; and 10 poster presentations. Caroline expressed tremendous excitement about the new poster presentation session as it creates a low-stakes presentation environment and serves to provide exposure particularly to undergraduate research projects. Caroline hopes to see these presentations continue at future conferences. Thanks was given to the Conference sponsor, Hargray Communications), as well as the Dean of USC-Beaufort and OLLI (The Osher Institute of Lifelong Learning) for making CCA Conference 2019 free of any expenditures on behalf of CCA. There were no questions.2nd Vice President Peter J. Gloviczki (Coker College) has begun planning the 2020 conference on the campus of Mars Hill University in Mars Hill (near Asheville), NC. Peter hopes to continue on with the tradition and legacy of CCA in 2020. Peter has made conscious effort to focus on hotel affordability (under $100/night). A site visit is scheduled for early-October, which he will report on to the Executive Council there afterward. Peter’s contacts at MHU are looking forward to hosting the Conference in 2020. It was noted that MHU does not offer major in Communication Studies. CCA will continue with the online Conference registration. Call for papers will be advertised in November. Peter will be reaching out for panel chairs, hosts, event planners and helpers, etc. soon. There were no questions.Treasurer Carol Leeman (University North Carolina-Charlotte) provided two financial reports of 2018-2019 expenses. These reports are attached at the end of this document. As of 9/25, 12 new memberships were added to the 2019 roll, increasing the total to 115. There were also $90 in new donations since that time, bringing FY 2019-2020 total income to $3,970. The Sonesta hotel deposit of $1,000 will be returned because room minimum was met. It was stated that the cost of printing the Annual through Sun Solutions is estimated at $1,200-$1,400. The 2019 Conference event cost CCA $0 in expenses. There were no questions.Secretary Alex Patti (Sandhills Community College) reported that CCA 2018 minutes were prepared by Theresa Russo posted to the CCA website. With the help of the Executive Council Alex decided to publish a quarterly/seasonal newsletter. Because of a user-error, the July newsletter was not sent to members. 2019 minutes and Conference follow-up newsletter will be provided in October/November. There were no questions.Carolinas Communication Annual Editor Jenni Simon (UNC-Greensboro) shared her pleasure in editing this year’s Annual. Because of submissions and acceptance the Annual ended up being, to quote Jenni, a “pretty big girl.” The 2019 Annual received 24 submissions, 13 papers and GIFTS were accepted and published (a 54% acceptance rate). For the 2020 Annual, Jenni would like to formalize the format and review guidelines for GIFTS in order to enhance the consistence of evaluation criteria. Jenni would also like to include line numbers for the review and editing/resubmission process. Jenni shared her gratitude to the reviewers. She made a conscious effort to keep their reviews manageable: no more than two papers or GIFTS per reviewer. Promotion and tenure letters for reviewers will be sent by Jenni. There were no questions.Web Manager Elena Martinez-Vidal (Midlands Technical College) was not in attendance. There was nothing to report. There were no questions.Executive Director Jason Edward Black (UNC-Charlotte) had nothing to report. Jason thanks Executive Council, praising their consistency.New Business John proposed that, with the growing trend of other Communication associations, CCA recommend to SACS that oral proficiencies be included in their next accrediting standards. SACS had previously dropped oral proficiencies in 2004. John stated that the Executive Council supported such a letter in an informal meeting.Jason Munsell asked for clarification as to what the letter would say. John shared that it would seek explanation for why oral proficiencies were dropped in 2004. Jason expressed that it is helpful to have one voice on the issue, explaining that the Southern States Communication Association has also thought on this issue and concluded that the wording and tone should be thoughtful. Richard Leeman read the SACS statement re: oral proficiencies from 2004. John asked that as SACS revisits their standards, does the Communication discipline want to be left out? John and Caroline Sawyer agree with the KY/TN Communication Association, but does the CCA body also agree? Jason commented that there is precedent for adding CCA’s voice to the conversation, and that John and Caroline should add their commitment first, then, if there is interest within CCA, to add the Association’s voice following consultation.Nominations for New OfficersJason Muunsell (USC-Aiken) was nominated for the role of 2nd Vice President.
