OPENING SENTENCE (BCP p. 75) The Officiant says

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Philippians 1:2

CONFESSION OF SIN (BCP p. 79) The Officiant says to the people

Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Silence may be kept.

Officiant and People together, all kneeling

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

The Priest alone stands and says

Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

INVITATORY - VENITE (BCP p. 80) Officiant and People together

Come, let us sing to the Lord; * let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation.

Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving * and raise a loud shout to him with psalms.

For the Lord is a great God, * and a great King above all gods.

In his hand are the caverns of the earth, * and the heights of the hills are his also.

The sea is his, for he made it, * and his hands have molded the dry land.

Come, let us bow down, and bend the knee, * and kneel before the Lord our Maker.

For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand. *

Oh, that today you would hearken to his voice!

PSALM: Psalm 145:8-9, 15-22 Please read responsively by half verse

8The LORD is gracious and full of compassion, * slow to anger and of great kindness.

9The LORD is loving to everyone * and his compassion is over all his works.

15The LORD upholds all those who fall; * he lifts up those who are bowed down.

16The eyes of all wait upon you, O LORD, * and you give them their food in due season.

17You open wide your hand * and satisfy the needs of every living creature.

18The LORD is righteous in all his ways * and loving in all his works.

19The LORD is near to those who call upon him, * to all who call upon him faithfully.

20He fulfills the desire of those who fear him; * he hears their cry and helps them.

21The LORD preserves all those who love him, * but he destroys all the wicked.

22My mouth shall speak the praise of the LORD; * let all flesh bless his holy Name for ever and ever.

At the end of the Psalm is sung or said

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

The Lessons

FIRST READING: Isaiah 55:1-5 The people sit.

A Reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah.

1Ho, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters;

and you that have no money, come, buy and eat!

Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.

2Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy?

Listen carefully to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food.

3Incline your ear, and come to me; listen, so that you may live.

I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David.

4See, I made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander for the peoples.

5See, you shall call nations that you do not know, and nations that do not know you shall run to you,

because of the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, for he has glorified you.

FIRST CANTICLE (BCP p. 85) Canticle 11: The Third Song of Isaiah Surge, illuminare

Isaiah 60:1-3, 11a, 14c, 18-19

Arise, shine, for your light has come, * and the glory of the Lord has dawned upon you.

For behold, darkness covers the land; * deep gloom enshrouds the peoples.

But over you the Lord will rise, * and his glory will appear upon you.

Nations will stream to your light, * and kings to the brightness of your dawning.

Your gates will always be open; * by day or night they will never be shut.

They will call you, The City of the Lord, * The Zion of the Holy One of Israel.

Violence will no more be heard in your land, * ruin or destruction within your borders.

You will call your walls, Salvation, * and all your portals, Praise.

The sun will no more be your light by day; * by night you will not need the brightness of the moon.

The Lord will be your everlasting light, * and your God will be your glory.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

SECOND READING: Romans 9:1-5 The people sit.

A Reading from Paul's letter to the Church in Rome.

1I am speaking the truth in Christ--I am not lying; my conscience confirms it by the Holy Spirit--2I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. 3For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my own people, my kindred according to the flesh. 4They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; 5to them belong the patriarchs, and from them, according to the flesh, comes the Messiah, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen.

A Light to enlighten the nations, * and the glory of your people Israel.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

THE HOLY GOSPEL: Matthew 14:13-21

Celebrant The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

13Jesus withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. 14When he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them and cured their sick. 15When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a deserted place, and the hour is now late; send the crowds away so that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves." 16Jesus said to them, "They need not go away; you give them something to eat." 17They replied, "We have nothing here but five loaves and two fish." 18And he said, "Bring them here to me." 19Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. 20And all ate and were filled; and they took up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full. 21And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.
