A rapid, well-coordinated response from the Facility Maintenance and Repair Division (FMRD), AMKC and EMTC kept a broken watermain from turning into a larger issue.

Early in the morning on Wednesday, Feb. 17, it was discovered that a watermain had broken near the Anna M. Kross Center. Before repairs could begin, DOC staff had to determine exactly where the break was located. The broken pipe was found 17 feet underground beneath a steam tunnel behind AMKC. After locating this break, a temporary repair was made to restore water to all areas.

Ten members of the FMRD, including plumbers and heavy equipment operators, worked all day on Wednesday and returned on Saturday to make the repair permanent.

Members of the jail Management teams, including Deputy Wardens, met with inmate councils to explain the situation and Correction Officers distributed water during the 12-hour shutdown on Wednesday and 4-hour shutdown on Saturday. Running water has been restored to both jails.
