Our student of the week is Kamarion! He has been a basic facts leader! He was the first to graduate from addition on XTRAMATH. He also made it on the basketball team! Congratulations Kamarion! YOU DESERVE IT!

Student of the Week:

Parent & Teacher Conferences!

PARENTS AND GUARDIANS:

I am sending home parent and teacher sign up times this week. During our meeting we will discuss grades, behavior, your child’s current reading score, and goals I have for your student. The students have been working so hard in school! I can’t wait to share their hard work with you. I will be able to answer any questions you might have. I want to help you to help your students, so please let me know if you have any questions.

MATH:

We are finishing Topic 4: Addition and Subtraction of Whole Numbers. We worked a lot on regrouping (remember borrowing and carrying over?)

Next Week:

Topic 5: Multiplying by 1-digit numbers. We will use mental math, breaking apart, arrays, and rounding to solve problems.

If you ever need help with math please write me a note, email me, or leave a message with the secretary.

MATHLETES:

Some of our students have created a voluntary group twice a week during recess. They wanted to come in and do math problems on the board. I was very excited to know that they were VOLUNTEERING to come in for extra help. If you would like your child to come in and work with the Mathletes let me know! Advanced students work on challenging problems, and students who need help get questions answered. I am proud of the class for coming up with this on their own.

Reading News:

We are finishing our first Novel study of “The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe,” by C.S. Lewis. The student have been reading and sharing their thoughts about the book every day for the last two weeks. They have created a very detailed “lapbook” project based on the book. I will have this displayed in the hallway for Parent and Teacher Conferences.

What can you do to help your child at home:

• Read with your child every night!

• Talk to your child daily about school

• Attend Parent Teacher Conferences

• Designate a quiet study area for your child to complete their homework

Writing Class:

Did you know that your student is an author? Since the beginning of school the students have created their own book. They spent time creating characters, a setting, a plot, a conflict (problem), and a resolution (ending where all the problems come to a close). They are typing their story on the iPads using capital letters, punctuation, quotes, and paragraphs. I can’t wait to “publish” our short stories for our publishing party! We hope to finish next week.
