Course Description: This course is designed to provide students a forum for transitioning into college. Students will learn to develop the skills required for success in college and beyond. This course is intended for first time in college students, who are seeking an Associate in Arts degree program.

Pre-Requisites: There are no pre requisites for this class.

Course Competencies:

Competency 1: The student will demonstrate knowledge of college matriculation processes and procedures by:

1. Demonstrating knowledge of registration procedures, degree requirements, advisement services, financial aid, and the Standards of Academic Progress

2. Identifying resources available at the College for successful academic progress including identifying and explaining the importance of the 10 MDC Learning Outcomes

3. Interpreting attendance and grading policies, and student rights and responsibilities

4. Describing and applying the registration procedures including degree audit, adding and dropping courses, official withdrawal policies, transcripts

Competency 2: The student will demonstrate utilization of effective study skills by:

1. Assessing his/her personal learning style and study skills

2. Applying effective study skills

3. Developing strategies for critical thinking, memory enhancement, and test-taking

4. Identifying useful time management systems

5. Applying knowledge of efficient note-taking skills, including active listening, organizing, and recording

Competency 3: The student will increase self-awareness and improve career decision-making by:

1. Identifying his/her personal characteristics including interests and abilities

2. Evaluating and comparing various career options and their requirements

3. Constructing a career plan that matches personal characteristics to career requirements

Instructional Strategies:

Class will primarily consist of lectures supplemented by online course modules.

Course Policies:

1. Attendance: Miami-Dade requires that faculty take attendance at the beginning of every class period. If you are late, it is your responsibility to ensure I know you were present. Do not interrupt a lecture to let me know you are present. If you have one absence, you may be dropped from the course. If you are dropped from the class, either by me or by the College for non-payment, you will not be allowed to attend class. You will not receive a grade nor will I accept assignments, papers, or exams from you. Class attendance will not count towards your grade. Students are expected to arrive on time and remain in class until the completion of the class period. You are responsible for information provided in class, even if you are not in attendance.

2. Course Drop: If you are dropped from this class by the instructor or for non-payment of student tuitions and fees, you will no longer be allowed to attend the class. I will not accept your assignments, papers, or tests; and you will not receive a grade for the course.

3. Withdrawal Policy: Withdrawal from a course is not encouraged. However, if you wish to drop this class, you are responsible for initiating and completing the withdrawal process by the College’s semester deadline. The College academic calendar is available at .

Note: If you stop attending classes without an official withdrawal, you will receive a failing grade for the course. Please remember that students are expected to earn at least 67% of the credits registered for in order to remain in good academic standing. Also, by federal regulations, your financial aid can be affected by excessive withdrawals and /or failing grades.

4. Make up work: No late work will be accepted. No exceptions. You are responsible for submitting work by the due date/time. You are more than welcomed to submit work early (but not late). If you should miss class, it is your responsibility to complete the work and follow up on what you have missed in class by contacting a classmate. The instructor is not responsible for reminding students about missing work and learning what they have missed in class.

5. Classroom Etiquette: Students are expected to abide by the college’s Code of Conduct as described in the Handbook of Student Rights and Responsibilities: . In order to maintain an appropriate learning environment, only individuals who are officially registered and on a paid status will be allowed in the classroom.

6. Conduct in the Classroom: You must turn off cell phones. If you want to listen to music, surf the web, or text, then do so outside of the classroom. If you disrupt the teaching/learning process or act in a disrespectful, threatening, or intimidating way toward me or other students, you will be asked to leave the class.

7. Readings/Assignments: Success in this course requires familiarity with the textbook. I will not cover all material in the text; however, you are responsible for all reading materials assigned. You will be responsible for extraneous materials I will cover in class. You should read all assigned chapters BEFORE the class period. Assignments must be turned in at the beginning of the class period. Late assignments will not be accepted.

Academic Integrity:

All students are expected to meet the College’s academic conduct standards. Acts of academic misconduct, including cheating, plagiarism, misrepresentation, and facilitating academic dishonesty will be referred to the Academic Dean. Students who break the College’s academic conduct standards will be charged with misconduct charges.
