PAGEREF _Toc60754487 \h 6Connecting to BU – an introductionIT Services has developed a number of digital solutions to support students’ studying and learning remotely. This includes various options for connecting to the university in order to use some of the applications and software available on BU computers or through the BU network.Connecting to BU’s NetworkIf you have a good internet connection and your personal computer is capable of and powerful enough to run the software for your course, BU’s VPN (Virtual Private Network) may be the best solution for connecting to BU. A VPN will allow you to access BU systems and software as if you were sat on campus using your own computer connected to the WiFi/network (e.g. if you have a Windows 10 computer, you can run applications through BU’s AppsAnywhere that are only available if you’re on BU WiFi and would not be available when using your home WiFi). The VPN is intended to be used where you need access to BU applications that are not licensed to be used outside of our network. These are typically applications used for design such as SolidworksPlease see the user guide section below for help with connecting to BU’s VPN (Virtual Private Network).Connecting to a BU computerIf you have a poor or moderate internet connection and your personal computer isn’t suitable for running your course software, there are two solutions available depending on what type of computer you need to use. Both options allow you to remotely operate a computer that is on campus. You will need access to a computer or tablet in order to connect to BU’s computers. (If you don’t have a computer of your own, there are computers available in the Library and Open Access Centres on both campuses). As a general rule, regardless of what type of computer you’re using (e.g. Windows, Mac, Linux or Chromebook), you will be able to connect to a BU Windows, BU Mac or BU Linux computer using the solutions outlined below, as long as that type of computer is used as part of your programme (e.g. you may not have access rights to a Linux computer if it’s not needed to support your programme delivery and learning). The BU IT solution for connecting to a BU Windows computer on campus is called VMWare HorizonThe BU IT solution for connecting to a BU Mac or Linux computer on campus is called Leostream (but needs to be accessed through an application called NoMachine).Checking what types of computer you are able to connect to:In order to check what types of computers are available for you to connect to (based on your programme requirements), navigate to the following link and log in with your BU credentials if prompted: up your programme via the drop-down selection (if it’s not in the list select “Not Listed”):Click on the ‘Download Client’ link for?the computer type you wish to connect to?(e.g. select the ‘download client’ for Mac if you need to use a BU Mac computer) and follow the onscreen instructions. You will be presented with various downloads for different computers - select the correct download?for the computer you are using. You will only need to do this download once, on each device that you use. You may need to open your downloads folder and ‘run’ the installation from there if the install doesn’t start automatically. You may also be asked to restart your device to complete the installation. Please see the User Guides section below further help with downloading the correct client.Note: You will also be given the option to use VMWare Horizon via a web browser, however, this is not recommended due to the slower speed compared to running Horizon via the downloaded application. The BU Workstation computer options will also not be available via a web browser. This is to ensure the best experience possible for you.Step-by-step user guides Click on the boxes below (ctrl + click or Cmd + click for Mac) for step-by-step guidance on connecting to a BU computer (regardless of what computer you’re using) or the BU Network:695960249555Connect to a BU Windows computer – User Guide400000Connect to a BU Windows computer – User Guide4832985238760Connect to a BU Mac or Linux computer – User Guide400000Connect to a BU Mac or Linux computer – User Guide241173066040Connect to the BU network (VPN) through your personal computer – User Guide00Connect to the BU network (VPN) through your personal computer – User GuideOther useful guidanceUsing a BU Windows computer on campus to connect to another BU computerYou can use a BU Windows 10 computer on campus (e.g. in the Library or Open Access Centre) to access a BU Mac computer using the instructions in this document.
