Guidelines: SCB Graduate Student Research Fellowship

The Society for Conservation Biology allocates ten SCB Graduate Student Research Fellowships awards per year. The SCB Global Awards Committee evaluates applicants on merit, and with respect to geographic, topical, gender and other aspects of conservation diversity. Students must be active SCB members in good standing.

• Timeline: Applications due 15 April 2018, with decisions announced in June 2018.

• Amount of award: $1,000 USD

Objective: To support travel, materials or equipment required to conduct research by graduate student members of SCB. Students must demonstrate financial need toward completion of graduate degree, and fellowship to be used toward support of field work, materials and equipment. Graduate research must contribute to SCB’s mission to advance the science and practice of conserving the Earth. The award is designed to support early or mid-stage graduate students who need assistance with costs toward field expenses in order to complete their degree.

Checklist:

1. Completed application form submitted by 15 April 2018

2. Short CV attached (max 2 pages)

3. Proof of SCB Membership

4. Proof of university enrolment during the period January-December 2018 (e.g., scanned copy of a university student card, registration fees receipt).

5. Letter of support from primary supervisor.

Submitting Your Application Package:

Your application package (application, CV, proof of university enrolment) and letter of support should be sent separately to awards@.

• If possible, please package your application materials into one combined PDF in this order: 1.) Application Form, 2.) CV, 3.) Proof of University Enrollment. Name the file so that your surname and first name are in the file name (ie DoeJane_GradAwardApp).

If you cannot combine your application materials into one PDF document, then please be sure to include all materials (application, CV, proof of university enrollment) in one email with your name included in the file name of each document (ie DoeJane_application; Doe_Jane_CV; DoeJane_Enrollment). The letter of support should be sent separately as noted above.

• The letter of support should be sent in a separate email with your name in the email subject line (ie Jane Doe Letter of Support) and the file (ie DoeJane_SupportLetter_NameOfSupervisor).

Short Answer

1. Please describe of location of your graduate field work (maximum 50 words)

2. Research Project (maximum 500 words). Please summarise your research project, including project objectives, methods and expected outcomes, and the progress to date. Be explicit about how your research contributes to the mission of SCB.

3. Budget justification (maximum 200 words). Please provide an explanation of what the funds would be used for, with expenses itemised, and how the funding will support completion of the graduate degree.

4. SCB Service (maximum 200 words). Please comment on your involvement with SCB, including how long you have been a member, what SCB conferences you have attended, whether you belong to a SCB Chapter, SCB committee service, etc.
