Note: Since the FDA has been essentially defunded and gutted, don't expect meaningful government action to protect either our human food supply or our medicines. Worse, pets are scarcely a blip on the regulatory radar. Ergo, we will have to rely upon internet reports of problems people experience with products sold in the United States.

This is NOT the first time Beneful has been implicated in pet poisonings and deaths, see:

Purina also produces jerky dog treats that are currently linked to many dog deaths.

Bully sticks dog treats may be high in calories, contain bacteria

New study finds bully sticks' calorie content may make up more of a dog's daily calorie requirement than expected

Release Date: 1/30/2013 Comments(0)

Dog treats known as bully or pizzle sticks may actually have more calories than expected and may also be contaminated by bacteria, according to a new study published in the Canadian Veterinary Journal.

Researchers from Tufts University's Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine studied 26 bully sticks, dog treats made from the uncooked, dried penis of a bull or steer, which were made by different manufacturers. They found that the dog treats contained 9 to 22 calories per inch, an average of 88 calories in the standard 6-inch bully stick. The amount of calories researchers found to be in the treats makes up 30 percent of a 10-pound dog's daily calorie requirement and 9 percent of a 50-pound dog's daily calorie requirement.

"While calorie information isn't currently required on pet treats or most petfoods, these findings reinforce that veterinarians and pet owners need to be aware of pet treats like these bully sticks as a source of calories in a dog's diet," said the study's author Dr. Lisa Freeman, a professor of nutrition at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. "With obesity in pets on the rise, it is important for pet owners to factor in not only their dog's food, but also treats and table food."

In addition, nearly one-third of the bully stick treats examined by researchers were found to be contaminated with bacteria. The type of bacteria found varied: Clostridium difficilewas found in one stick, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus was found in one stick, and E. coli was found in seven sticks.

November 22nd, 2012. Petsit USA reports that Science Diet has just acquired a patent for its process of adding plastic to pet food, a deadly, unnatural ingredient which increases the corporation’s profit at the expense of pets ([pic]):

Science Diet Acquires Patent to Use Polyethylene

by RYAN on OCTOBER 5, 2012 in [pic]PET HEALTH

Science Diet has recently acquired a patent to use polyethylene in their products.  The purpose is to extend the shelf life of their products.  Polyethylene is a common plastic that is widely used to create plastic bottles, plastic bags, plastic films, and many more products.  Using this plastic in food could be dangerous for you and your pets.  Many people are not aware of the potential side effects.  It is possible that polyethylene products can cause cancer.  PetsitUSA will keep you updated with news on these products, but you may want to consider avoiding these products, especially reusing plastic bottles.

Update:  You can find more information on the low-density polyethylene at [pic].

Dr. Russell continues:

Basically, there is no way polyethylene should be ingested and it is even questionable whether or not this product should be used to contain food for any length of time (because most plastics can leach into foods and be ingested accidentally).

Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is a polymer of ethylene (a familiar component of anti-freeze) distilled from alcohol or petroleum. It has not been a human "food ingredient," but has been a base of chewing gum and has been added (as ground-up plastic containers) by farmers to cattle feed, replacing healthy roughage. Extending shelf life is a no brainer since this is plastic, not food. They could get the same result by grinding up old car tires -- and if they could get away with it, they would! Oral doses of LDPE have resulted in cancer, as well as liver and kidney damage.

Purina recalls treats sold throughout US after New York, USA, Department of Agriculture testing found antibiotic residue in product samples

Release Date: Wednesday, January 09, 2013 Comments(0)

Nestlé Purina PetCare Company's wholly owned subsidiary Waggin' Train LLC is voluntarily recalling its Waggin' Train and Canyon Creek Ranch brand dog treats sold throughout the United States until further notice. The New York, USA, Department of Agriculture notified the company that testing found trace amounts of antibiotic residue in samples of Waggin' Train and Canyon Creek Ranch chicken jerky treat products.

According to the company, the antibiotics found in the chicken jerky treats are approved for use in poultry in China and other major countries, but are not among the antibiotics approved for use when raising poultry in the US.

"Waggin' Train has served millions of pets and their owners very well. In the final analysis, our company and our loyal consumers must have total confidence in the products we sell and feed our pets.
