MARU-A-PULA ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES

ART CLUB is suitable for students with a keen interest in creating masterpieces. It is open to art students who need extra time to work on projects for their final exams and to those that are interested in beautifying the school.

BBH involves the upkeep of the Boys’ Boarding House (BBH). The service involves communal work such as cleaning, minor maintenance and the general upkeep of the BBH. Students are expected to use their initiative in making sure that the boarding house is kept clean. The service operates on a flexi-time basis.

BETTER WRITING is a club designed to help improve students’ writing skills through the continuous writing and editing of articles, stories and poems. The final product is a magazine showcasing some of the literary talent in the school.

BIBLE CLUB is an open discussion group where students are encouraged to study the scriptures and find out how Christian values such as love, peace and respect could help shape their lives. It is hoped that this club will encourage students to apply these values in their day to day lives through their words, actions and character, and build on their faith.

BOOK CLUB is run by the library staff and aims to foster a reading culture among students. Book Club activities include individual and group reading and writing book reviews.

BRIDGE is a thinking person’s card game enjoyed by numerous people of all ages. If you are an effective communicator, skilled at working out probabilities and have good powers of recall, then this is the club for you.

CHESS allows students to pit their wits against one another by playing this immemorial board game. It is open to both beginners and advanced players.

CLAY CLUB is an activity where students learn how to make household clay products. Students in this activity learn how to glaze and shape products which are then sent for firing as the final step.

COMPUTER PROGRAMMING allows students to acquire programming skills using Microsoft Visual Basic, which allows them to write, edit and test Windows applications in subjects such as Maths, Accounts and Science. Projects include creating systems for payroll, inventory control and students’ information among others. Students may choose to sit for an exam set by the Computer Society of South Africa, sponsored by Old Mutual.

CONVERSATIONAL CHINESE teaches students how to communicate in Chinese, acquiring fundamental skills through speaking, listening, reading and writing in the language.

DEBATING is where students convene to discuss a wide range of topics. In addition to increasing their awareness of contemporary issues, students also sharpen their critical faculties and have a great deal of fun in the process!

DECOUPAGE builds students’ creativity by motivating them to make new useful products from old glass bottles, wood and other household items.

ECONOMICS CLUB provides an environment that is less formal than the classroom where economic theories and their applications in the real world can be discussed. The students have the opportunity to apply what they have learnt, make informed decisions, and evaluate policy issues.

INTER-HOUSE PLAYS is designed for aspiring actors who want to unhinge their potential. This annual activity adds a competitive twist to the entertainment by challenging students act out and direct scenes in an effort to outdo each other. Between the four school houses, a few laughs are guaranteed to the audience at the final showdown.

MARIMBAS is an enrichment and service activity which engenders self-discipline, the development of intellectual and physical dexterity, and emotional skills. The programme rewards participants with enjoyment and fun. For a few, the crown comes when they perform for VIPs outside the school, or when they are selected to represent MAP and the country on marimba cultural exchanges.

MATHS, SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY CLUB aims to help students to use the Science, Mathematics and Technology skills they acquire in the classroom to solve real life problems. They are given opportunities to be innovative and have fascinating experiences related to Mathematics, Science and Information Technology.

MUSICAL INSTRUMENT TUITION allows students to take recorder, flute, clarinet, singing, trumpet, trombone, sax, and piano and music theory lessons in preparation for entry into the Associated Board and Trinity exams. Instruments are available for rent from the Music Department.

MUSIC THEORY is for all students, beginners and exam candidates, following the Trinity Guildhall syllabus. Students learn how to read and write in musical notation.

ORCHESTRA plays various styles of music. The main aims of the Orchestra are to encourage students to play together, promote happy music-making, as well as provide the opportunity for the beginners to learn from the more advanced students. The Orchestra meets once a week for two hours. Anyone who has a reasonable level of competency on their instrument may join. All instruments are welcome.

PHOTOGRAPHY is an activity that takes place every Wednesday, with the aim of teaching students how to best utilise a camera. In photography, students learn many different skills which may propel them into film and directing careers but will also prove to be useful in everyday life.

POETRY CLUB intends to develop the love and understanding of figurative language through works of art by Maya Angelou, Shakespeare and other great poets.

SAT CHEMISTRY is where Mr Noble, the Head of the Chemistry Department, will unravel the mysteries of SAT Chemistry. The course takes place on Monday afternoons and involves going through topics that are not taught at AS or A2 Chemistry, but appear regularly on the SAT II paper such as entropy and logic. The course is designed to be taken by sixth form students considering SAT II. Exam practise is part of the activity.

SCHOOL PRODUCTION is an initiative by the Drama Department where every year, an all-student cast organizes a staged production. This activity affords the more dramatically-inclined population of the student body an opportunity to hone and display their artistic talents in the crafting of a spectacular show. The students who participate in this activity are offered valuable insight into the workings of theatre productions, while those who simply come to watch are guaranteed a once-in-a-lifetime dramatic experience.

STUDY SKILLS is run to help junior students organise their study timetables and to learn how to make the best of their study times in order to improve their grades.

VERBAL EMANCIPATION is about expressing oneself through writing and creating poetry and music. The students organize a production each year and use the proceeds to purchase toiletries for less privileged teens in government secondary schools. This activity is a wonderful way to express yourself through writing and contribute to the community in a meaningful way.

ZUMBA is fusion of Latin American dance styles with African freestyle movements. The lessons aim to teach movements, steps and choreography, as well as provide a rigorous workout for those intending to keep fit.
