Concepts of Criminal Law

Fall 2019

Student Learning Objective: At the conclusion of the course, students will understand the historical development, philosophy and constitutional provisions of criminal law.

Students registered with the LAVC Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) Office will be accommodated in this class by additional instruction and/or more manageable separate assignments.

INSTRUCTOR

Michael Frias, UCLA BA (History) is experienced in adult institutional and community corrections with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR).

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course covers the historical development, philosophy and constitutional provisions of criminal law. Additionally, classification of crime and their application to the justice system, legal research, study of case law, methodology, definitions and concepts of law as a social force will be covered.

TEXT

Contemporary Criminal Law by Matthew Lippman 5th edition SAGE pub.. Every student must have access to and read the assigned text. Failure to do so will result in a lower grade. Each week we will review assigned chapters in the text and take the chapter quiz.

ATTENDANCE

Students should attend all class meetings in order to take weekly quizzes and properly document lectures and presentations. Admissions and records has asked all instructors to remind students that it is their (students) responsibility to drop classes and that failure to do so may result in an “F” grade on your college transcripts. Review the LAVC FALL 2019 class schedule for specifics regarding deadlines for dropping a class.

STUDENT SERVICES DIVISION

Student Services is the division of the college involved with student development outside of the confines of the classroom. CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR

You shall conduct yourself in a manner appropriate to a college environment. You shall respect the professor and other students, their statements and opinions. The use of cell phones is prohibited in the classroom but may be answered during break time outside the classroom. All LAVC “Standards of Student Conduct” (refer to FALL 2019 LAVC Catalog), including those proscriptions regarding academic dishonesty (section 9803.12) apply in this class.

GRADES

There will be non-comprehensive midterm and final exam, each consisting of true/false and multiple choice questions. Grades will be assigned based on the following point system: Midterm 35%, Final exam 45% and Quizzes 20%

Extra Credit

Book reports and current events can be created into a journal for extra credit as deemed necessary by the instructor.
