Position Description

TITLE: Contemporary Worship Director (Part-time Salaried Employee)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

This Contemporary Worship Director position is responsible for the overall leadership, design, and implementation of all aspects of the Contemporary Worship Service in coordination with the Classic Worship Service Leader and the Interim Lead / Teaching Pastor. This includes planning music for regular worship service activities and special services such as Good Friday, Easter, Christmas, etc. The Contemporary Worship Director will, under the supervision of the Interim Ministry Staff Supervisor, establish an atmosphere of praise-based worship that is energetic, animated and connects relationally with those attending. In addition, the atmosphere will model God-centered and God-seeking encounters, both personally and corporately. The director will plan, coordinate, and execute all elements of the Contemporary Worship Service, as well as coordinate with the Classic Worship Director the general structuring of both services. These responsibilities may include: choirs, vocal ensembles, instrumentalists, sight and sound personnel, readers and drama teams. The Contemporary Worship Director will recruit and encourage participation and growth in all worship ministries.

MISSION AND PURPOSE:

The music and worship ministry exists to create an atmosphere for a creative, energetic and meaningful worship experience. This is accomplished by encouraging the congregation to give praise and glory to God by proclaiming His worth and authority. It is meant to support the mission and vision of the church as expressed in its vision statement.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

50% Time - Manage worship images, lyric/chord sheets, and worship videos on Church network. Oversee the work of the Sight & Sound Team for both worship services, as well as weddings, funerals and other special events. This includes recruiting, training and scheduling volunteers for both services. In addition, sight and sound responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, preparation of stage per the needs of each service, rehearsal and check of all equipment being used before the service, oversee any staging changes between services, ensure that equipment and lights are turned off and appropriately stored after the final worship service and manage the functionality and maintenance of equipment. Carry-out regular meetings with volunteers for the purpose of ensuring consistency, quality, and timely preparation, as well as maintain regular communication with worship team volunteers through Planning Center, or other scheduling tools.

25% Time - Provide musical and spiritual leadership in the development of the

instrumental and vocal elements of contemporary worship services. Research new music, videos, and other worship elements for the contemporary service. Plan, in coordination with the Interim Lead / Teaching Pastor and the Classic Worship Director, the service, and order of service, in such a way that is thematically integrated and contributes to the other elements of the service.

25% Time - Recruit, train, and schedule musicians for weekly services. Build multiple worship teams compromised of musically capable people who are active in the ministry of GracePointe and schedule their serving on a rotating basis. Lead/oversee all Contemporary Worship rehearsals.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Formal music education or training such as a Bachelor’s degree in Music or Worship Ministry, or being in process towards one, is desirable, but not required for this position. A combination of experience and training may substitute for the formal education. Three to five years of experience in music leading, program design and implementation in a worship or church setting is preferred for this role. We place great value on leadership skills, a heart for God, musical talents, and an aptitude for bringing people into the presence of God through music.  It would be very helpful for the person in this position to possess knowledge of piano, guitar, voice, percussion and other musical instruments.  It is also expected that this person would be updating and continuing to improve in these skills.

OTHER SKILLS & ABILITIES

Possess the ability to apply biblical truths to music and its expression. Be able to sight-read music, analyze music, and communicate the ideas to others who are of varying levels of musical skill and interest. Also, be able to make good selections in hymnody and contemporary music.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Oversee volunteers in music ministry such as worship team volunteers and sight and sound technical team volunteers. Work collaboratively with Interim Lead / Teaching Pastor and Classic Service Worship Director.

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT:

The Contemporary Music Director is a part-time, 20 hour per week position subject to the guidelines of the Employee Handbook and regular employee policies and procedures.
