Job Description: Assistant Headteacher

Salary Scale: Leadership Scale (L1 – 5)

Specific Responsibilities: Leader of progress and standards of continuous improvement for all pupils, including leading ALN transformation.

Line Managed by: Headteacher and Governing Body

This post is an opportunity to play a crucial role in ensuring that Fenton Primary School moves forward on its progress journey moving out of Estyn review. The Assistant Headteacher will work alongside the Headteacher and fellow Assistant Headteacher in defining, articulating and implementing the shared vision and strategic aims of the school through effective communication and engagement with all stakeholders. It is expected that the Assistant Headteacher will demonstrate outstanding leadership skills working with the Headteacher on the implementation of the strategic direction of the school and working with individuals and groups to ensure the high quality education for all our pupils.

The functions and specific responsibilities below are to be undertaken in conjunction with the duties of an Assistant Headteacher as defined in the Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document.

Purpose of the Job

• The Assistant Headteacher will be a model professional, setting an example to all staff.

• They will model good practice, develop and sustain positive relationships, support training and development to ensure quality first teaching and secure the smooth running of the school.

• Performance Manage staff including Upper Pay Scale Teachers.

• To take responsibility for ALN, progress and standards of continuous improvement.

General Responsibilities of the Assistant Headteacher:

Strategic Leadership and Management:

1. Work in very close partnership with and support the Headteacher and fellow Assistant Headteacher in the effective day-to-day management of the school and school community.

2. The Assistant Headteacher will be instrumental in developing and implementing health and safety policies, leading assemblies and staff meetings, arranging cover for absent staff or staff on PPA / training, hosting and organising whole school events such as open days and parents evening, and responding to the views, needs and requests of children, staff, parents, governors and visitors.

3. Work closely with the Headteacher, Challenge Advisor and fellow Assistant Headteacher, staff, and governors in the development, implementation and review of school improvement plans. They will monitor and evaluate of standards and quality of provision, supporting school governance by attending meetings where appropriate and ensuring that governors are able to play an active and informed part in school improvement.

4. Work effectively with the whole staff to develop a strong learning environment that has at its centre high expectations of teaching, learning, performance, academic achievement, wellbeing and behaviour.

5. Work with the Headteacher and fellow Assistant Headteacher to provide high quality Continuous Professional Development (CPD) for all staff ensuring needs are identified and met through quality training opportunities within available resources.

6. Monitor the effectiveness of teaching and learning through teachers’ planning, work sampling, lesson observations, listening to learners, reporting outcomes and planning next steps and future actions.

7. Support the Headteacher and fellow Assistant Headteacher to share the responsibility for the recruitment, deployment and induction of new staff, voluntary help, work experience students or trainee teachers throughout the school ensuring all safeguarding requirements are met and that their work supports the learning and wellbeing of all children.

8. Along with the Headteacher and fellow Assistant Headteacher, promote achievement and wellbeing and effectively manage the school resources to achieve the school’s stated aims, meet its targets and reaches high achievement.

9. As part of the senior leadership team - lead, set, nurture, promote and maintain a very high standard of mutual respect throughout the school ensuring that all staff play an active role in pursuit of these standards.

10. Promote and model positive relationships with parents and carers, which are based on partnerships to support and improve pupils learning and achievement.

11. Contribute to the development of school to school working by modelling partnership with other schools and through promoting innovation and best practice.

12. Contribute to the policies and practices which promote equality of opportunity and tackle prejudice and discrimination, support staff wellbeing and work-life balance and help to ensure that we provide opportunities for growth, achievement and success for all children and adults in the school.

13. To ensure the highest standards of professional conduct and confidentiality at all times, and in particular when with other staff of the school.

14. To proactively ensure the development and maintenance of a high performing team culture that enables all members of the team to be effective in their respective roles.

15. To proactively contribute to the development and maintenance of a collaborative culture which demonstrates loyalty and integrity towards school policies and systems.

16. Assume responsibility for the management and leadership of the school in the absence of the Headteacher.

Specific Responsibilities of the Assistant Headteacher:

Estyn Recommendation 2 - Ensure that all pupils make good progress and achieve well in relation to their starting points

To lead on the introduction and implementation of the new ALN code and transformation programme

1. Lead on the setting of challenging high targets and closely monitor progress in achieving these.

2. Ensure that information on pupil progress is used to improve outcomes for pupils.

3. Inspire, challenge, motivate and empower others to attain challenging outcomes.

4. To have an overview of all areas of underachievement and liaise closely with staff to identify and remove barriers to learning which may affect pupil achievement, including those of pupils with ALN and eFSM.

5. To lead on the strategic analysis and dissemination of data across the school and undertake appropriate activities to investigate further the issues affecting achievement.

6. To work proactively with teachers and teaching assistants to ensure that data is used effectively to inform and improve standards across the school.

7. To provide regular updates on pupil progress to the Senior Leadership Team, Local Authority and Governors.

8. Implement pupil tracking systems, monitoring their effectiveness and impact in raising attainment.

9. Lead on all aspects of school systems including timetables, rotas and the annual assessment calendar.

10. To lead the school forward in the implementation of the new ALN code and transformation programme.

11. Improve the planning and delivery of support and challenge for all learners, especially those with ALN and those who are more able.

12. To support the Headteacher to raise the standards of attainment and to narrow the attainment gap for disadvantaged pupils.

13.Support the Headteacher in ensuring robust evaluation of school performance, progress data and School Improvement actions to secure and maintain high standards.

14.To facilitate the implementation of the annual monitoring and evaluation calendar, linking this to the ALN programme.

15.To develop and maintain tracking systems ensuring that information on pupils’ attainment is used effectively to ensure pupils’ progress.

16.To analyse and interpret National, Local and School data, together with research and inspection evidence, to inform policies, practice, expectations, targets and teaching strategies.

17. To manage effectively the data and standards transition of pupils during each phase of their education (Entry to Nursery and Reception, Foundation Phase to Key stage 2, Key stage 2 to Key Stage 3).

18.To support the Headteacher in setting challenging targets for pupil attainment leading to whole school improvement.

19. To coordinate and support end of key stage moderation.

20. To lead the school’s internal moderation programme.

21. To coordinate the programme of internal assessments and support subject leaders in analysing data and reporting on outcomes.

22. To coordinate all external assessments (National Tests, Reception on entry baseline) and support colleagues in analysing data and reporting on outcomes.

23. To coordinate the production of end of year reports to parents.

24. To support the Headteacher by leading pupil progress meetings.

25. To assist Headteacher through data analysis and preparation for School Improvement Committee meetings.

26. To work with the fellow Assistant Headteacher to develop an innovate curriculum which ensures that all pupils make good progress and achieve well in relation to their starting points.

27. To work with the Headteacher and fellow Assistant Headteacher to lead staff in ensuring an equity-based ethos across school.

28. To work with the Headteacher and fellow Assistant Headteacher to lead staff in order to ensure that they develop their thinking around an equitable approach to many aspects of education and remind them of the challenges our most disadvantaged learners face.

Other duties and responsibilities:

Any other duties that the Headteacher may from time to time ask the post-holder to perform.

To professionally support the Headteacher and Governing Body and to lead by example to all other staff.
