Constitution

Article I The name of this organization shall be The Conversation.

Article II The purpose of this organization is to allow a safe place for students to discuss social, personal, political, and controversial topics. This organization will allow students not only to form or strengthen their own ideas and beliefs, but also to receive better understanding of other’s beliefs. This organization is intended to help students learn how to have healthy conversations about difficult topics in an effective manner.

Article III MEMBERSHIP

Section 1: Any registered student (full or part-time) at Lone Star College-CyFair who is in good standing with the College and fulfills the membership requirements of the organization may be a member.

Section 2: In order to guarantee equal rights for all members of the Lone Star College-CyFair student body, equal opportunities shall be afforded all students without regard to race, color, sex, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, religion, ethnic or national origin, disability, veteran status, or any other protected status.

Section 3: Privileges of membership include attending weekly meetings, holding an office, and voting. Voting privileges will be restricted to Lone Star College-CyFair student members.

Article IV OFFICERS AND ADVISORS

Section 1: Officers include the President and Vice President.

Section 2: Officers must be Lone Star College-Cyfair students. Also, officers must be organized and willing to come to all meetings, unless there is a valid reason for absence.

Section 3: The term of office begins immediately after election, in the beginning of the fall semester, until the end of the following spring semester.

Section 4: Duties of Officers:

President: The President will work with the Advisor to determine topics and questions that will be discussed in the coming meetings, as well as inviting and communicating to students/members about when the next meeting will be and what will be discussed. The President must be organized for the meetings and ready to communicate with the Vice President and/or Advisor about what needs to be done if the President will be absent. The President must also stay in communication weekly with the Advisor.

Vice President: The Vice President will work with the President to ensure they are well supported. The Vice President will take role of President if the President is absent.

Both the President and Vice President are responsible for maintaining effective communication with one another weekly, regarding upcoming meetings.

Section 5: If the President position becomes vacant the Vice President will assume the position of President until the end of that semester, regardless of whether it is the spring or fall. Then at the end of the semester a vote will be made in a regular election if it is the spring, and in a special election if it is the fall. If it is the fall, the Vice President should be strongly considered to hold Presidency until the end of the next spring. If the Vice President position should become vacant, the President and the Advisor will pick someone to fill the role until the next standard elections, held in the spring.

Section 6: The Advisor works with the President to help with communicating with students and to help form discussion topics for each meeting. If, for any reason the President and Vice President will be absent for a meeting, the Advisor will take lead at the meeting, or may discuss with the President about cancelling the meeting.

Article V ELECTIONS

Section 1: Elections will be held the first week of fall semester classes.

Section 2: Anyone can be nominated to an office and the candidate receiving a simple majority will be declared the winner.

Section 3: If there is a tie, the President will break the tie.

Section 4: A petition of one-half of the total number of members shall be cause for a recall election. The offense must be in writing and submitted by a member. A recall election shall be held at the next regular business meeting after presentation of the recall position and shall be conducted as a special election. Recall will require a favorable vote of two-thirds of the voting membership.

Article VI MEETINGS

Section 1: The time, date, and place of regular meetings shall be determined by the majority of the membership at the first regular meeting of the term, but it must be in agreement with what the Advisor and officers can do.

Section 2: Meetings will be held weekly or bi-weekly.

Section 3: Special meetings can be called by the President and they must communicate this to the Advisor, Vice President, and members. Special meetings can also be called by a two-thirds majority of members and must be approved by at least one officer and then be communicated the officers and Advisor.

Section 4: Quorum for regular and special meetings shall be three-fourths of voting members.

Article VII FINANCES

Section 1: Fiscal Operating year for this organization is September 1-August 31, same as Lone Star College.

Section 2: There will be no dues charged for this organization.

Article IX AMENDMENTS

Section 1: Proposed constitutional amendments or changes shall be presented to the organization in writing, one meeting before it may be voted on.

Section 2: Approval by three-fourths of the voting members present at a regular meeting shall pass a proposed change. The change shall be put into effect after approval from the Advisor and the Director of Student Life.

Article X RATIFICATION AND ENACTMENT

This constitution shall become the official governing document of the organization, upon ratification by a three-fourths majority vote of the membership in attendance, and approval and acceptance by the appropriate recognizing body of Lone Star College-CyFair.
