Conceptual Physics POGIL: The Electromagnetic Spectrum

The Electromagnetic Spectrum

The electromagnetic spectrum is an ordered list of all the types of electromagnetic radiation. All electromagnetic radiation can be described using a wave/particle model. The types of radiation and their wavelength ranges are shown in the diagram below.

Wavelength (() - Units: m

Frequency (f) - # of waves that pass a given point

In one second. Units: Hz, sec-1, waves/sec, 1/sec

Energy (E) - Electromagnetic radiation carries energy with it over space. Units: Joules, J

Electrons have a dual wave/particle nature. Because of this the frequency, wavelength, and energy associated with an electron moving within an atom can be calculated. The relationship between frequency (f), wavelength ((), and energy (E) is described by the following equations:

Problems

1. Calculate f if (= 5.60 x 10-7m.

2. Calculate ( if f = 6.24 x 1014 Hz.

3. Calculate E if f = 6.24 x 1014 Hz.

4. Calculate f if E= 4.20 x 10-19 J.

5. Calculate E if (= 5.60 x 10-7m.

6. Calculate ( if E = 3.20 x 10-19 J.

7. Calculate f if (= 7.33 x 10-7m.

8. Calculate ( if f = 4.20 x 1014 Hz. Convert ( to nm (1nm=10-9m). Is this light visible? Yes/No

9. Calculate E if f = 5.50 x 1014 Hz.

10. Calculate f if E= 3.90 x 10-19 J.

11. Calculate E if (= 7.50 x 10-7m.

12. Calculate ( if E = 3.06 x 10-19 J. Convert ( to nm (1nm=10-9m). Is this light visible? Yes/No

If yes what is the color?________
