GUIDED NOTES:

FRACTION, DECIMAL, RATIO, and PERCENT EQUIVALENTS

Recall that a percent is part of one hundred. Percents are usually written with the % symbol instead of as a ratio, fraction, or decimal number, but all of these expressions are equal.

In general,

• Convert percents to decimals, fractions, and ratios by ÷ of 100.

• Convert decimals, fractions, and ratios to percents by x of 100.

Notes about percents:

[pic]To write a percent as a decimal, drop the % sign and move the decimal point two places to the left.

[pic]To write a per cent as a fraction, drop the % sign, write the per cent as the numerator with the denominator 100 and reduce the fraction.

[pic]When you convert your fractions to a ratio, be sure to make any whole or mixed numbers improper. Because a ratio is a comparison of two numbers, the ratio must have two numbers. So 4 is the ratio 4:1, and 3 2/3 is 11:3.

Here is a table of equivalent conversions:

| |Percent |Fraction |Decimal |Ratio |

|Examples: |7% |7/100 |0.07 |7:100 |

| |24% |6/25 |0.24 |6:25 |

| |175% |1 3/4 |1.75 |7:4 |

| |800% |8 |8 |8:1 |

DRILL/KILL PRACTICE SET: Directions: For each of the problems below, fill in the missing values into the table for each number given. Then check your answers. Your answer will be a percent, a fraction, a decimal, and/or a ratio depending on the given value in each problem. If your answer is a percent, it must include the % symbol. Be sure to write your fractions in lowest terms and simply your ratios. See the examples in the chart for the fraction one and nine tenths and 20%.
