Key Vocabulary

Numerator: The top number in a fraction. It indicates the number of parts out of a total number of parts.

Denominator: The bottom number in a fraction. It indicates the number of parts in the whole.

Quotient: The answer to a division problem.

Divisor: A number which is divided into another number.

Why is it called IMPROPER?????? It's IMPROPER because it is NOT between ZERO and ONE.

Changing a Mixed Number to an Improper Fraction

Steps:

1.) Multiply the denominator by the whole number.

4 X 5 = 20

2.) Add the product (20) to the numerator. (2)

20 + 2 = 22

3.) The number you get in step 2 is your new numerator.

4.) The denominator stays the same.

Steps:

Converting from IMPROPER to MIXED.

1.) Divide the NUMERATOR (top number) by the DENOMINATOR (bottom number). Do NOT use a calculator.

2.) The answer will be a mixed number. The whole number is the QUOTIENT and the remainder becomes part of the fraction.

3.) The remainder becomes the NUMERATOR of the fraction and the DENOMINATOR is the DIVISOR.
