HP Cool Car 1.0

HP Cool Car 1.0 allows the vocal consultation of your Avaya Unified Messenger account using your PDA. The Unified Messenger tree-structure is the basis of the application but Cool Car does not include all Unified Messenger functions.

This application is designed to work on the PDA Jornada 928 of HP. The operating system is PocketPC 2002.

This application was made thanks to a partnership between HP and the ESISAR-INPG, within a 2nd year industrial project carried out by 3 students.

This guide is intended for use by Jornada 928 common users. It includes a glossary in Appendix 1: Glossary and visual cues to help understanding.

|Tap on Jessica radio button to hear a woman | |

| | |

|Tap on Roger radio button to hear a man | |

| | |

|You can also choose your recognition mode: speaker dependent or | |

|independent. | |

| | |

|The two bottom buttons are available only when “Speaker Dependent | |

|Recognition” is selected: | |

| | |

|Tap “Launch Training” to launch the training process for all the words. | |

|Tap “Replay All Templates” to hear your own templates (only if already | |

|recorded). | |

| | |

2 What Speaker Dependence Use?

The speaker independent mode recognizes anybody’s voice and do not require any training process. Select it to use Cool Car immediately.

Using the speaker dependent mode will decrease recognition misses - since the engine will recognize your pronunciation and only yours - but this is achieved at the cost of the training time. We suggest to select speaker dependent recognition when you are a little bit familiar with Cool Car.

3 Speaker dependent training process

Presentation

During the training you will repeat each word or groups of words three times (Cool Car will keep the best pattern in memory).

Once achieved the training process creates the SDTemplate file (approximately 300 kb) used by the speaker dependent engine. The template file remains the same until the user decides to re-train Cool Car.

The training process must be achieved completely once started. If not, Cool Car keeps the previous training template-file as the current template, or works in speaker independent mode if the file doesn’t exist.

| | |

|[pic] |When you are training Cool Car please avoid noisy environments and echo. We recommend to use the free hand kit to get |

| |better results. |

Launching the training process

There are two different ways to launch the training process:

1/ If the SDTemplate file does not exist, when you select “Speaker Dependent Mode”:

| |[pic] |

| | |

| | |

| | |

|The following message box appears: | |

If you select “No”, the “Speaker Independent Recognition” mode remains selected.

If you select “Yes”, the training process begins.

2/ If the SDTemplate file exists, when you tap the “Launch Training” button:

A message box asks you for a new training process:

|If you select “Yes”: |[pic] |

|The training begins. | |

| | |

|If you select “No”: | |

|The training is not launched | |

|The existing SDTemplate file is kept as the current SDTemplate file | |

The training process

Please see previous paragraph to learn how launch the training.

The words trained are:

1/ yes

2/ ok

3/ no

4/ back

5/ main menu

6/ review

7/ send

8/ new email

9/ saved email

10/ deleted email

11/ skip

12/ reply

13/ next

14/ abort

15/ leave

16/ sender

17/ all

18/ spell

19/ number

During the training if you select “Cancel” in any message box, the following message boxes appear:

| |When the template file doesn’t exist: |[pic] |

| | | |

| |If you select “Yes”: | |

|[pic] |No information is saved and the training is canceled. | |

| | | |

| |If you select “No”: | |

| |You will continue the training process. | |

| | | |

| |When the template file already exists: |[pic] |

| | | |

| |If you select “Yes”: | |

|[pic] |No information is saved and the existing template file is kept as the current | |

| |template file. | |

| | | |

| |If you select “No”: | |

| |You will continue the training process. | |

During the training:

|First message box | |

|[pic] | |

| |In this message box you see the vocal command to pronounce, (the word or phrase written between |

| |quotation marks). |

| | |

| |Tap on OK to continue |

Now pronounce very clearly the word, here, “yes”. A second message box appears if no error occurred:

|Second message box | |

|[pic] | |

| | |

| | |

| |Tap on OK to continue |

For the second time, repeat the indicated word, here, “yes”. A third message box appears if no error occurred:

|Third message box | |

|[pic] | |

| | |

| | |

| |Tap on OK to continue |

For the third and last time, repeat the indicated word, here, “yes”. A fourth message box appears if no error occurred:

|Fourth message box | |

|[pic] |The application replays your best pattern. |

| | |

| |If the template sounds very clearly without noise, echo or crackings select Yes to save it. The |

| |application will go on to the next word. |

| | |

| |Otherwise select No. You will train the word one more time and have the opportunity to get a |

| |better result. |

If you trained a template for several times and it does not sound clearly, try to find a an environment with a lower noise level - or try to speak more clearly (you can exaggerate the syllables constituting a word to get better results)

When recording patterns, you can encounter the following error message boxes:

|[pic] | |

| | |

| |Means that you haven’t pronounced the pattern enough loudly |

| | |

| |Tap on OK to record the pattern again. |

|[pic] | |

| | |

| |Means that you have pronounced the pattern too loudly. |

| | |

| |Tap on OK to record the pattern again. |

Application use

When launched Cool Car :

- Opens a phone connection with the server (except if the executable copied on the device is only the speech recognition demonstrator)

- Enters your Unified Messenger account number (as configured)

- Enters your Unified Messenger password number (as configured)

Then you can browse your Unified Messenger account either by using your voice or by tapping buttons on your PDA (at the same time).

1 Graphic user Interface

There are four parts in the interface

2 Buttons

You can tap on the buttons to access Cool car menus. The buttons labels are also the possible vocal commands.

When you use a button while the speech recognition engine collects audio data the command is executed when the data collect loop ends (Cool Car memorizes that you pushed a button).

3 « Recognition result » text field

In this frame you can read the last recognized word or phrase by the application. You can also read recognition errors if case.

4 « Vocal Commands » text field

In this frame you can read all possible vocal commands for a particular menu.

5 Access to configuration button

You can access to the configuration by tapping on the “Access to the configuration” button in the bottom of your screen:

[pic]

There is no vocal access to the configuration.

As said before if the application is recording when you tap this button, you have to wait the end of recording.

6 Vocal interface – TTS

When you consult you unified messenger account, a voice tells you in which menu you are and eventually what to do. This voice is synthetic speech or TTS (stands for text-to-speech).

7 Navigation

When you consult your unified messenger account, different screens appear. To access to your requests you have to browse a tree structure.

To go on the next screen you can tap on buttons or speak the voice commands showed on the buttons labels or in the “Vocal Commands” text-field.

1 Cool Car Tree structure

On the next page you can see how the different screens are connected forming the Cool Car tree-structure (this structure is copied on the Avaya unified messenger one).

On the tree’s top you have the starting point (“Main menu”) . From this screen you can review or send messages. You can return to the starting point by saying “main menu” or by tapping on the main menu button. Some of the screens allow the user to return to the previous menu by using the command “back”.

You can quit Cool Car at any moment by using the “leave” command.

If the command is not recognized, you can encounter the following error messages:

[pic] Try again, with a little exaggeration.

[pic] The recognition was clipped by an excessive noise.

[pic] You spoke too softly in a high-noise level environment

[pic] You spoke too softly.

8 Contacts creation and configuration

In “Spelling recipient’s name” you can specify your recipient by spelling the name of a person within your contacts.

Your contacts have to be configured in a text file on your PDA.

Create a text file (extension .txt) named L2Wwords.txt.

In this file write at each line the name of your contacts (one full name per line : name and first name separated by a space e.g. “bob matthews”). Copy your file into My Device/Program files/Fonix/fre/fd01/English/asr.

You can modify the file directly from your PDA or by using your connection with your desktop PC.

If you want to use your desktop PC:

- Copy the file in your desktop PC

- Modify the file with Notepad

- Save the file

- Copy the file on your PDA (but remember, imperatively into My Device/Program files/Fonix/fre/fd01/English/asr)

If you modify the file from your PDA:

| |[pic] |

|Open the file Explorer | |

| |[pic] |

| | |

| | |

| | |

| | |

| | |

| | |

Appendix 1: Glossary

Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) Automatic speech recognition technology (also known as Voice Recognition) refers to the ability of a machine to recognize the human voice. ASR systems are generally categorized into two types. Speaker independent ASR can recognize speech from any speaker. Speaker dependent ASR can identify speech from a specific speaker.

Noise Any interference that affects the operation of a device. In communications, noise consists of random electronic signals, produced either naturally or by the circuitry, that degrade the quality or performance of a communications channel.

Speaker-dependent (SD) The application requires the user to train it to recognize his or her voice.

Speaker-independent (SI) The application does not require training.

Speech recognition The ability of an application to understand the spoken word for the purpose of receiving command and data input from the speaker.

Training The process of speaking a series of preselected phrases for the application. This provides the application with more information about the voice of the speaker and can improve speech recognition.

Synchronization The process of comparing the files or data on two computers to ensure that they contain exactly the same information.

Tap Touch the screen once with the stylus to open items and select options.

Tap and hold Tap and hold the stylus on an item to see a list of actions available for that item. On the pop-up menu that appears, tap the action you want to perform.

Template Recognizers Template recognizers work by comparing speech input to a series of stored speech templates. Each template represents a single word or phrase. Templates are created by sampling and digitizing speech sounds and creating an identifiable digital pattern for each separate word or phrase. When a user speaks, the input is compared to the stored templates and a match is identified, if possible. If not, the user can be prompted to repeat the word or phrase. Template recognizers work best when users are restricted to a small vocabulary and pronounce single words or phrases distinctly.

Text-to-speech (TTS) Technologies for converting textual (ASCII) information into synthetic speech output. Used in voice-processing applications requiring production of broad, unrelated, and unpredictable vocabularies, such as products in a catalog or names and addresses. This technology is appropriate when system design constraints prevent the more efficient use of speech concatenation alone.

Voice command A word or phrase associated with a voice menu. When an application recognizes a voice command, it notifies the application that owns the voice menu containing the command.
