CREST Enrichment Winter 2017 Class Descriptions

3D Game Development (1st? 5th grade; McKinley) Our students build amazing 3D games and ar t by using Microsoft's Kodu Game Lab to design and code their own digital masterpieces. Students learn the fundamentals of coding in an incredibly fun, project-based format. From conditional statements, to variables, to loops, kids learn code fundamentals and more as they create complex games that will blow their minds AND open their eyes to the power of learning to be digital creators. This class is great for beginner through intermediate programmers. Each student works with their own laptop provided by the instructor.

Academic Chess (TK? 5th grade; Edison, Roosevelt) Checkmate! Come and join us in this fun and educational class, designed for all ages and levels of chess expertise. Every child will receive a different lesson each week according to his/her skill level, as well as the opportunity to practice their game with other students. On the last day of the session, a mini-tournament will take place.

Anime/Cartooning (Kinder and 1st? 5th grade; Franklin) is a gr eat way to lear n how to sketch and dr aw. You will learn to create your own characters as well as popular characters from Disney, Anime, and more! Learn about storylines, design, coloring and lettering as you create your very own comic book!

Our Black Belt Kids (K? 5th grade Franklin; Muir/SMASH, Roosevelt) pr ogr am is designed to target age-specific skills for children in elementary school grades. The curriculum introduces core skills training to the elementary age student reinforcing their physical, intellectual, social, and emotional abilities. More emphasis is placed on building their core fundamental skills with a strategic balance of martial arts. Each class, students will earn skill stripes signifying their progress and qualifying them for their next rank.

Cute and Cuddly Animals (TK & K; Edison, Muir/SMASH) is a hands-on experience with some of the most adorable animals around! Kids will enjoy learning about new animals each week from guinea pigs to ferrets, miniature chickens, bunny rabbits, and more! This exciting and enchanting class is perfectly suitable for kids of all ages.

Digital Production (1st? 5th grade; Edison) is for students inter ested in tr uly pr ogr essing through the journey of making videos well. This class will allow students to fully develop their concepts as well as techniques and skills so that they create a product and video/film they are proud of. Digital Production will allow students to try a multitude of roles that exist in the filmmaking process: director, writer, cinematographer and editor.

Funky Divas and Dudes (1st? 5th grade; Grant, Roosevelt) Calling all Popstar s! Hip-hop dancers will learn to move and groove to their favorite songs "music video style!" They will learn to dance to popular music video choreography and dress up in Rock star costumes to create music videos! We will crank up the music, teach you the moves, sing along if you'd like, dress the part in costumes and you will have the time of your life! A video link of all the dances learned will be sent home to the parents so they can watch their popstar Rock Out!

Guitar (Kinder and 1st? 5th grade; Franklin) Discover musical aptitude in a fun introduction to music through guitar with a talented Santa Monica Conservatory faculty teacher. Learn new songs each week and perform in an end of the session concert. Registration fee includes use of instrument during class time.

Guitar and Violin (Guitar is K? 5th and Violin is 1? 5th grade; Roosevelt) Discover musical aptitude in a fun introduction to music through guitar or violin with a talented Santa Monica

Hand Building with Clay (TK? 5th grade; McKinley, Muir/SMASH. Students will lear n pinch pot, coil and slab techniques using air dry clay to create animals, vessels, masks, tablets, creatures and perhaps even an imaginary world! Once dried, participants will paint their creations with acrylic paints. They will learn about color, color mixing, the color wheel, design, line, shape, form, texture, ornament and image while experiencing he malleable magic of clay along the way! Students will experience the difference between two and three-dimensional works, hands-on, through doing.

Happy Kid Yoga (TK & K; Franklin, McKinley) is a natur al way to exer cise, r elax, focus, and strengthen the body/mind connection. This engaging and fun class offers your child a fantastic introduction to yoga games, songs, breath, meditation and fun yoga movements. Happy Kid Yoga (1st? 5th grade; ; Franklin, McKinley) class will explor e yoga concepts like gratitude, respect, compassion and mindfulness. New poses and breathing techniques will be taught each week in a fun and playful manner. Throughout the session, student will have an opportunity to create their own yoga sequence, including their favorite poses to build strength, flexibility and balance.

In Music 'N Motion's Hooping for Health (1st? 5th grade; Roosevelt) class, boys & gir ls lear n technical moves & high flying tricks with a hula hoop, while incorporating rhythm & expressive movement to ultimately create an exciting new dance form! Tricks include figure eights, halos, the 360 spin, hip hooping, corkscrews & more. Children have a blast showing off all these new tricks to family and friends!

Iron Chef (Kinder and 1st? 5th grade; Franklin) In this scr umptious class, kids will tantalize their taste buds and have fun with food! Different recipes each week! Learn the math of measuring, nutrition, dining etiquette, and cooperation skills.

Karate (TK? 5th grade; Will Rogers) Boost your child's self-confidence and physical fitness while they have fun and build vital skills such as; patience, persistence and an active lifestyle through martial arts. Practicing karate is to face challenges, learn to focus, solve problems and set goals and stick to them. Our students train on soft targets without any contact to each other. Our karate program has been designed with young children in mind. Your child will learn blocks, kicks, punches, stances and have plenty of fun.

KinderTech (TK & K; Edison, Roosevelt) In a wor ld wher e it's never too ear ly to lear n pr ogr amming, KinderTech is designed to foster a create-over-consume mindset. Featuring visual programming, robotics and digital design, students receive a fun and balanced mix of creative expression and applications of technology (including robotics, electronic circuits, Scratch Jr., Minecraft, Vine, and more). Students will get repetitive, early exposure to the principles of programming, the engineering process, digital canvas and more... all while building a foundation of basic coding concepts on which to grow in future classes.

LEGO? Bricks! Bricks 4 Kidz (Kinder and 1st? 5th grade; Franklin) J ump into an extraordinary adventure where kids have loads of fun using STEM-based model plans designed to introduce them to the basic principles of architecture and engineering, trigger their lively imaginations and build self-confidence. All while they have fun building dragsters, lunar rovers, tilt-a-whirls and spin art machines with the classic LEGO? bricks we all know and love.

Lego Engineering & Architecture (TK? 5th grade; Grant) Br ings together thousands of Lego parts, a master Lego instructor and the imagination of your Lego engineer. The result is an explosion of creativity and fun! Lego engineers build awesome robotic and architectural projects that may include alien mini-bots, cloud-piercing super-towers, cable cars that glide through the air, medieval draw bridges and warrior quad-bots. All projects teach engineering principles while promoting creativity, problem-solving skills and selfconfidence. Project lessons are selected in accordance with the age, skill level and interest of the group.

Lego Movie Production (1st? 5th grade; Franklin, Roosevelt)-Ready to take your fascination with Legos to the next level? Movies By Kids will provide all the Legos you need to create amazing movies. The ideas will be yours, the sets will be built by you, and you will operate all the equipment to bring your masterpiece to the big screen. Whether it's a re-creation of an epic pirate battle scene, or an adventure in another galaxy, this class is the ultimate chance play with Legos and make them come to life using the art of Stop-Motion-Animation!

Lego Robotics and Engineering (TK? 5th grade; McKinley) Br ings together thousands of Lego parts, a master Lego instructor and the imagination of your Lego Engineer. The result is an explosion of engineering creativity and fun! Lego engineers build awesome projects powered by electric motors, springs or human power, including mini-bots from the future, battle tanks, cable cars that glide through the air and warrior quad-bots. All projects teach engineering principles while promoting creativity, problemsolving skills and self-confidence. Project-lessons are selected in accordance with the age, skill level and interests of each group.

Lego Storytelling (Kinder; Franklin) Do your kids love Legos? Now they can use one of their favor ite toys to tell their very own stories! We will help your children storyboard and photograph each scene in their story. The

ideas will be theirs, the sets will be built by them and we will help them operate the cameras to capture their stories in a visual and memorable format that will be yours to treasure. After all the scenes have been created, the kids will

provide a narrative voice over and choose the music that best fits their movie. This class is the ultimate place to play with Legos and learn how to tell a story. All stories will be available to view and download.

Mad Science (K? 5th grade; Edison, McKinley, Roosevelt, Will Rogers) We ar e on a mission to explore the world of Science! Build your own Technicolor Blender while learning about the hidden components of light. Use hands on experimentation to find out if compasses really help you find your way. Have fun with thermometers and investigate amazing optical illusions. Explore how sounds are created and transmitted and create hair-raising experiments with plasma balls. Cultivate a healthy attitude about fitness and nutrition in a fun way while discovering the biology of your taste buds! Machine Makers (Kinder and 1st? 5th; Franklin) A fun, hands-on class for budding engineers to gain practice with the engineering process and learn about simple machines (gears, levers, pulleys, etc.). Students in Machine Makers will create, design, test and modify what they build after experiencing how various simple machines work in our every day lives.

Martial Arts (TK? 5th grade; Mckinley) Students will enjoy lear ning the FUNdamentals of Martial Arts, including stance, punches, kicks, and blocks. They will warm-up and stretch at the beginning of each class and cool down at the end of class. Emphasis will be placed on safety, the use of their new skill for self-defense only and respect. The benefits of these classes will include learning discipline and focus as well as enhanced self-confidence. and self-esteem.

Math Craft Coding (For 1st-5th grade; Franklin) Can you say "win-win"!?! Math Craft is the class where both parents and students truly win. Parents get to watch their students become thrilled about math in a fun, project-based format! This class is a MUST for any parent who wants their children to learn math on a deeper level. Students will build math problems inside the game of Minecraft, and solve them using our one-of-a-kind, amazing Math Craft program. They'll also learn basic coding using Minecraft's command block interface.

Jr. Mechanical Engineering (Kinder; Franklin, Roosevelt) Is your child fascinated with things that move? The Junior Mechanical Engineering classes introduce our youngest engineers to fundamental concepts of energy, materials, and movement. Through open and focused exploration, students explore and construct their own roller coasters, catapults, cars and more!

Mechanical Engineering (1st? 5th grade; Roosevelt) Want to be a master of machines? Design and create roller coasters, extreme defense vehicles, air-powered custom dragsters, catapults, and more in this program. Explore the fundamentals of energy, aerodynamics, traction, durability and more all while building different machines. Best of all, you'll be able to bring your creations home!

Minecraft Movies (1st-5th grade; Roosevelt) Do you love Minecr aft? J oin the exciting class where kids will design a Minecraft world using Legos, create their own crazy Minecraft mini figure and finally utilize iPods to create their own Minecraft movie. They will even create voices for all of their characters. Design monsters, creepers on your own personal hero to tackle the incredible environment that you create...All movies will be available to view and download.

Musical Theatre (1st? 5th grade; Edison, Franklin, Roosevelt, Muir/SMASH) A fun, non-competitive production class in which each child is given an opportunity to sing, dance, and act in a short presentation of "THE WIZARD OF OZ". Children will strengthen their abilities to perform and collaborate, enhance their skills of interpersonal awareness, and build self-confidence.

Music `N Motion (Kinder; Roosevelt) ) Come dance with us as we explor e ever ything fr om Jazz to Pop to Ballet to Broadway, all in one exciting and energetic class! We welcome silliness and imagination as children use their entire bodies to stay active, find comfort in their own skin and grow up strong. On the final day of class, parents are invited to attend a special performance complete with simple costumes, make-up and photos, all provided by MNM!

Oceanography: Discovering the Depths of the Pacific (1st? 5th grade; Grant, Roosevelt) Shar ks! Seals! Sea Shells! Let's dive into the depths of the ocean and discover the mysteries of the Pacific Ocean. Through marine science we will study plant and animal life, geography of the ocean floor and mythical legends. Students will engage in project based learning by creating an underwater ecosystem of their own as well as developing a campaign against single-use plastics. Join Sonya Serge in the journey to the ocean and uncover the magic under the sea!

Play To Your Health (TK? 5th grade; Franklin, Grant) A physical educational program specifically designed for the youth of today. By combining practices from popular sports, gymnastics, track & field, and fitness training with innovative games and unique equipment, students improve their athletic performance while having a great time!

Programming with Scratch (1st? 5th grade; Roosevelt) Lear n the fundamentals of coding by starting from Scratch. Scratch is MIT's engaging, easy-to-use, drag and drop programming language that introduces programming to young coders. From brainstorming to play-testing, students make interactive programs that incorporate a variety of foundational coding concepts. Draw characters and worlds on a digital canvas and make them come to life in games, animations, music videos, and more... all while building a foundation of basic coding.

Rookies Performance Skills & Games (Kinder; Franklin, Roosevelt) This exciting camp utilizes soccer, basketball, agility games and other sports to cross-train your child and help them discover their favorite sports while playing creative games! Class time addresses the rules of many sports, sports technique, speed and proper footwork, hand-eye coordination, nutrition, exercise, and goal setting.

Science Explosion (Kinder and 1st-5th grade; Franklin, Grant) can be so much fun! We teach inquiry-based exploration with hands-on materials as students learn to become critical thinkers. Kids won't be bored for a minute with the wide range of science they will experience during the session. Color-changing beads, density columns, ice cube ropes and so much more!

Spanish (K? 5th grade; Roosevelt) Join our Spanish Club and expose your child to Spanish from an early age. Our focus and teaching methodology is based on "learning through doing". Children pick up the language naturally through songs, play, story-telling and activities rather than just memorizing random vocabulary. Classes are very hands on and dynamic where children are exposed to the language in a natural way and acquire the language organically.

Spanish (Kinder and 1st-5th grade; Muir/SMASH) Give your child the gift of learning a second language. In this class, students will have the opportunity to immerse in the Spanish language and culture. Each class will incorporate art, storytelling, games, music and multimedia activities to learn Spanish in a fun way! This class is a great for new and returning students.

Spanish (Kinder and 1st? 5th grade; Franklin) Kallpachay is a 100% full immer sion Spanish language program where instruction is given completely in Spanish. While in small group settings, the students are motivated to speak Spanish only. The activities are designed so that students will speak in Spanish to achieve objectives. This way, they are actively using the language and it becomes a natural part of their routine.

Play Tennis with TGA (1st? 5th grade; Edison) Elementar y. TGA br ings the tennis cour t to your school, offering a fun introduction to the game. Students focus on improving fine motor skills and coordination through games and drills while learning the basic rules & etiquette of tennis. Coaches use teachable moments during lessons and games to promote life skills like perseverance and sportsmanship. Modified equipment and activities are designed to help each student reach a new level of success in an entertaining and supportive environment.

Tinkering Workshop Juniors (Kinder; Roosevelt) Come make awesome stuff with us! J unior Tinkerers explore wind, wheels, wood, and wire to make inventions and structures. Experiment and explore with ReDiscover's 6' wind tube, race tracks, and age appropriate mobile workshop with real tools like saws and drills. Tinkerers work individually and in teams to brainstorm, design, build, and test creations as wild as their imaginations. Our skilled facilitators provide a safe tinkering environment with frequent opportunities for one-on-one instruction. Tinkering Workshop (1st? 5th grade; Roosevelt). Come make awesome stuff with us! Tinkering Workshop, based on the approach at Tinkering School LA camps, teaches children the skills they need to work confidently to design and build creations as wild as their imaginations. Tinkerers use clamps, saws, and drills to turn wood and recycled material into sculptures and inventions. Our skilled facilitators provide a safe tinkering environment with frequent opportunities for one-on-one instruction.

Typing & Precoding (Kinder; Franklin, McKinley) Typing with CodeREV? Our kids learn to type as they complete fun challenges and games. More than just typing, we integrate game logic to help kids build their pre-coding mental muscles as they learn to use the keyboard. They key is that our students have fun as they learn this essential life skill early in life.

Yoga Buddies (TK & K and 1st-5th grade; Edison) Students pr actice yoga in a fun and meaningful way while increasing their physical and mental elements through yoga poses and healthy breathing techniques.
