Battle of Wartenburg

October 3, 1813

GL Yorck von Wartenburg vs. GD Henri-Gatien, Comte Bertrand

Start time: 1000 hours. French & allies have first movement. The scenario starts after the early morning weak Prussian assault against the French held dike position ends in failure.

End time: 1800 hours (nightfall turn) or if either side retires from the scenario tabletop.

Starting MFP level: French have used 23 MFP (102 total) during the morning hours of defending the forward Wartenburg positions, marching and light skirmish actions. Prussians have used 38 MFP (227 total) while crossing the Elbe river, failed their initial assault on the Dike position, and marching to scenario 1000 hours start positions.

Special scenario rules: French & Prussian national characteristics rules in effect. See Wargamerabbit. blog site for the current .pdf downloads.

French Legere 1813-1814: French Legere regiments cannot use open order formations except for their internal light company miniature (voltigeur) within the battalion.

Torgau Garrison rule: Historically the Prussians thought possible garrison column reinforcement could arrive from Torgau. Therefore, once Bleddin is cleared of French or Allied units, they must leave four near full strength units within the Bleddin area (1’ of town), till scenario end, to defend against any hypothetical French reinforcement from Torgau. Other Prussians units, above the four nominated units, are free to march towards Wartenburg, thus flanking the French defenders.

Prussian Battalion Masse 1809-1820: Prussian regular infantry (line, fusilier or grenadiers) units had a special anti-cavalry formation called “battalion Masse”. When a regular infantry battalion is formed into a dense column with the miniatures arranged at least 3 ranks deep then the battalion is formed for a battalion masse formation. When faced by a cavalry charge morale check, the battalion has a +2 CMR adjustment morale modifier to pass the morale check. No modifier is given for infantry shock combat. The front face of the battalion is assumed to be a square formation vs. charging cavalry shock combat. When using musket fire, use the normal 3 rank firing line found on the small arms firing charts. If the battalion is in morale disorder, all benefits for battalion masse are lost. The battalion masse formation can be used against European and Ottoman Turk armies.

Third (3rd) Rank Skirmisher 1805-1820: Using this rule, veteran regular line, reserve, or specifically noted (ie. campaign seasoned) battalions can deploy their “third rank” as semi-open order skirmishers before their parent unit. Third (3rd) rank skirmishing follow all open order formation rules. Availability and use rules are:

a. If the infantry battalion has a permanent “Voltigeur or similar light company” within the battalion organization structure then this rule cannot be used to deploy the center company miniatures as skirmishers.

b. Prussian styled volunteer Freiwilligen jagers (FWJ) are not considered light company skirmishers (per a. above) as they are not part of the Prussian battalion or cavalry regiment organization on a “permanent basis”. Freiwilligen jagers do count towards the determination of how many miniatures can be deployed.

c. No green “conscript” rated or units with a CMR 5 or less can deploy third (3rd) rank skirmishers.

Up to one third (1/3 RD) of the battalion’s miniatures can be deployed as semi-open order skirmishers within 5” of the parent battalion. If the parent battalion retires away, the skirmishers must be moved to retain the maximum 5” deployment radius.

Prussian Artillery C Class Firing 1813-1815: Due to the rapid expansion of the Prussian artillery arm, make 1/3 of the available artillery in army as Class C firepower rating. No CMR adjustment. Look carefully on Prussian roster for these C class firepower batteries.

Freiwilligen Jagers 1813-1815: These special 1 to 5 miniature units are attached to a Prussian parent battalion or cavalry regiment. Their CMR is the same as their parent unit’s center companies or cavalry squadrons. The suffer morale adjustment and morale checks as per the 3rd rank skirmisher rule. A majority of the infantry miniatures would be rifle armed. All FWJ miniatures are full open order skirmishers. Just like ordinary cavalry charging through their own open order screen, FWJ withdraw to the 2nd cavalry ranks position without any ride through roll for losses. Just retire and re-attach / place the cavalry miniatures, in column, behind the charging parent regiment. This makes the charging cavalry unit a massed formation. Note that mixed or different regiment skirmishers suffer a ride through roll if friendly charging cavalry ride into the skirmisher formation.

Weather: Clear but cool autumn day for Chart #4. Was misty during the earlier morning hours before the scenario start but clears to normal visibility during the battle.

Line of communications (LOC): French LOC exits on road exiting the N map edge at E6. Prussian LOC exits at the Elster town Elbe River crossing just off map near A1 and A2.

Terrain notes:

Streams terrain disorder and cost 2” to cross. All woods are medium for scenario. The marsh /swamp ground costs 2” for CO infantry only. No cavalry, artillery batteries, or train units permitted unless on roadway (one cavalry miniature or 5 cannon width) in transit. Marshy pasture ground or wet bog is 2” for CO infantry, 2” for cavalry or 4” for artillery. All artillery batteries (including horse batteries) act like and move like positional batteries (base 6” move) if positioned on the boggy ground. Wartenburg castle is class III building for 6 miniatures. Other scenario buildings are class II and hold 6 miniatures, unless small, then 4 miniatures. Movement cannot cross the Elbe River or Oxbow lakes unless using the two pontoon bridges off tabletop at Elster crossing. The dike position is a class II earthen wall with +1 CMR defense modifier. Firing is permitted across the dike with class II wall reduction effect. CO cavalry regiments and all batteries take entire move to cross unless on roadway. Start adjacent to dike wall, cross to other side, and place in morale disorder, and remain limbered if artillery battery.

Starting positions and Orders (LOC): All French are acting under “Hold position” senior order so no attack orders are allowed. Prussians are under “Advance position” senior order so no defend orders. Both sides have all their starting tabletop commands in battle mode with the initial order detailed below. Prussian Advance Guard and Reserve cavalry arriving commands are in strategic march mode. All French and Prussian units set up in the rear half of each map square per normal miniature tabletop deployment rules. Definition of command orders covered at Wargamerabbit.

French:

IV Corps HQ (Bertrand) * D5 with Hold position senior order

12th Division (Morand) C4 and B5 with Defend order

15th Division (Fontanelli) D4 and E4 with Defend order

38th Division (Franquemont) * E1 and F2 with Engage order

24th Lt Cav Brigade (von Jett) H1 with Engage order

29th Lt Cav Brigade (Beaumont) H6 with Reserve order

Torgau Garrison (unknown Cmdr) Off map H1 or H2. See notes below.

* Note for 38th Division split deployment: 2nd and 3rd Combined btns., and their artillery battery, up front near Schuberg. Combined light and 1st Combined battalion in front of Bleddin. The French 12lb Positional battery attached to IV Corps headquarters is deployed separately in A5.

Prussian:

Army of Silesia (Blucher) Off map in Elster, across Elbe River

1st Korps (von Yorck) A2 with Advance position senior order

Advance Guard Cav. (von Katzeler) Off map Elster, across Elbe River, Reserve order

Advance Guard Inf. (von Gartringen) Off map Elster, across Elbe River, Reserve order

1st Brigade (von Steinmetz) B3 with Attack order

2nd Brigade (Pz. Mecklenburg) C1 with Attack order

7th Brigade (von Horn) A2 with March order

8th Brigade (von Hunerbein) Off map in Elster, March order

Reserve Kavalry (Wahlen-Jurgass) Off map Elster, across Elbe River, Reserve order

Note: The Advance guard and Reserve cavalry commands must cross the Elbe River. See the Off map reinforcement section below for river crossing details.

Off map reinforcements: No actual French reinforcements during scenario. The Prussians were nervous of possible French arrivals from the Torgau garrison south of Wartenburg. See Special scenario rules above.

Prussian Army or Corps HQ attached artillery batteries may independently march via off table transit boxes to reach possible opposite bank Elbe river bombardment zones (Artillery A or B on map) or cross Elbe river after all Prussian infantry battalions and cavalry regiments have crossed. Upon reaching these transit zone boxes, they can effectively fire (measure from scenario table edge) with assumption that the battery is just off the table edge plus 4”. These batteries can only be fired upon by French or allied artillery using counter battery round shot.

Batteries using Transit boxes are in strategic mode and move one zone per turn. Takes the normal one turn to change for strategic to battle mode (enable bombardment). Artillery battery re-supply requires an army HQ train presence.

Prussian Advance Guard commands or Reserve cavalry command may start crossing the Elbe River after Prussian control any building of either Wartenburg or Bleddin is determined. Control is defined as starting any Prussian Movement phase occupying one or more buildings of the town or at least one building last occupied by a Prussian unit. For crossing the Elbe River, assume two pontoon bridges are available, one for each road entrance point. Eighteen infantry or nine cavalry miniatures per bridge each turn, entering on either road from Elster town (A1 or A2) in strategic road mode column. Any attached artillery crosses last, following their cavalry or infantry column.

WR used a rough 1:90 miniature scale for these orders of battle. (2x6) = 2 battalions of 6 infantry miniatures each. Cavalry are regiments. (8) for artillery equals 8 cannon in battery. FJ means Freiwilligen jager attachment in battalion or cavalry regiment.

Victory conditions:

Reduce the Prussian victory level by one (towards a draw result) if either the Advance Guard brigades or Reserve Cavalry brigade changes out of strategic road march mode during the scenario play. Historically they were never engaged during the battle.

Prussian Major Victory: Sweep the entire French IV Corps from the battlefield with 60% or greater command loss. Isolated French battalions cannot prevent the Prussian Advance Guard and Reserve Kavalry Brigades from exiting the northern table edge by 1740 turn scenario turn.

Prussian Minor Victory: Push the French IV Corps from the battlefield with 40%, but less than 60% loss, before the scenario end on 1740 hours turn. Isolated French battalions cannot prevent the Prussian Advance Guard and Reserve Kavalry Brigades from exiting the northern table edge by 1740 turn scenario turn.

Draw: French IV Korps exits the northern corner tabletop edge and under 40% command loss. The Prussian Advance Guard and Reserve Kavalry brigades don’t exit the scenario table before 1800 hours. (Historical result)

French Minor Victory: French IV Corps still remains on tabletop at scenario end and under 60% command loss. Prussian Advance Guard and Reserve Kavalry brigade prevented from exiting the northern scenario table edge 1800 hours.

French Major Victory: French IV Corps still remains on tabletop, under 40% command loss and Prussian Advance Guard or Reserve Kavalry brigade prevented from exiting the northern table edge before 1800 hours.

Rules of Play: Wargamerabbit. has a rules section providing files; charts, table and game play example YouTube videos.

General note: Also spelled “Wartenberg” in various references. Current Google map search has “Wartenburg” for the town name. Either way WR expects would be correct depending on historical time period but von Yorck’s family title has Wartenberg as spelling.

MFP = Morale Fatigue Points. See main rules for details and usage during scenario.
