Dick Dowen loves to travel and walk and learn stuff. There’s an outfit, related to Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI), called Road Scholar that specializes in educational travel for adults. They have programs where you can travel to, walk around, and learn about various cities. Interesting knowledge nuggets Dick has gleaned from Road Scholar – South Carolina was the last state to allow first cousins to marry. (This was because women weren’t allowed to own real estate, so to keep property in the family these marriages were necessary.) Back in the day there were “brown bag clubs” where you couldn’t join unless your hand was lighter than a brown bag. Once Roger got the computer hooked up and running, Dick showed us several videos about Road Scholar. Lots of people seem to really enjoy the programs. There were rocks and turtles and buildings and animals and other stuff that people saw. They liked it so much that many of them contribute to RS. There are “intergenerational” trips (where you get to bring your grandkids). Group charters are possible, so if 20 or more Kish Kiwanians (Mary’s all ready to sign up) want to go to Yosemite, they can put a program together for us. Even if you don’t go as a part of a charter, you may still find someone who knows about Sully’s here in DeKalb, or so Norm tells us. Prices range from about $1000 or two for 5 days to a domestic location, up to about $8000 to $10,000 for an African safari. Check them out at .

Heard around the tables…

An added benefit of Kiwanis projects: bonding with a fellow Kiwanian or two. Also, Job 1 – take the money.

Quote for the Day
